Not sure if VS Racing and On3 make turbos in the 50’s and 60’s mm’s, but those have been proven durable units that are peanuts.

eBay has a slew of intercoolers that cost $100-150. If you can fab your own mounts and piping, you’re golden.

Only major expense I foresee is headers and wastegate. Again though, if you can fab, you can convert long tune headers into turbo headers for cheap. eBay sells T3 and T4 flanges for around $50. Tubing is peanuts too.

Agreed, however I was going to say on a 3.0L- biggest single exercise of the whole job will be the efi/ecu conversion? 930 headers etc can usually be found for not much $$

Well said JP, many of my posts are me researching and testing the waters to see what people have done to better understand the options and pitfalls that may be ahead depending on the path that I take.

My plan is long term, I intend to learn the car as it sits and upgrade as needed where needed. There is a lot to learn, but it hard to learn if I don't ask all the questions and turn over all the stones right. ;)

here are some early shots of my car freshly swapped. I named this car simply "SLB"

This is without and with the andial intercooler which I still have, but don't use. I really didn't want a tail and wanted to try and keep the stealthy nature of a Porsche without tail intact but just didn't have at the time the fab skills needed to make a water intercooler fit.
Was running .5bar on a 1976 930/51 6.5/1 engine with a gt30r turbo and 915. That combo gave me white knuckles and a stomach ache till I got used to it. Was awesome!
Then the intercooler peekaboo tail. This kept a more or less calm less aggressive look than the turbo tails which I don't like.
With intercooler I raised boost to .8bar and once again had white knuckles and scary face. Then the clutch began slipping and after swapping to a centerforce clutch I began breaking second gears (2 gearboxes).

And inspiration for what came next.

Most of the big bits are pretty easy to get and sort it seems, what were the fiddely areas for you guys.

Also if I do go this route and buy a used 3.2 manifold, I assume I would want the fuel rails and wiring if available?

FYI I would plan on using an aftermarket ECU set up.

Thanks again for all the input.

I always thought about using the stock CIS system, and then only using EFI for anything over atmospheric going into boost on top of the CIS. Basically, you'd have an injector or injectors in the plenum only spraying fuel during boost.

quattrorunner 09-27-2018 12:06 PM

If you get the manifold and fuel rails you’d want the fuel lines. But buy them new. Working doormat matter of your doing efi kit. Actually you could probably put together fuel lines cheaper yourself if your handy and know the fitting sizes.

Piggyback. Ya that would work. Efi is smarter.

What are you guys running for transmissions? The 915 from what I can discern (i'm sure mine is worn) is a scrap heap of a transmission.

Wondering why you wouldn't swap a 930 4spd. I would think the sale of the 915 would offset most of the cost and the durability would certainly be worth it.

quattrorunner 10-06-2018 12:51 PM

The 915 is a cheep transmission to find and buy. The 930 isn’t. You need a short bell housing version so it’ll fit the sc or mid year body. I found one. They’re not cheep. And once You get it installed, you lose the quick reflexes of the short ratios. My 930 is OK first second and third gear but fourth gear is rather lethargic unless you have a lot of power. And finally now I have a lot of power. But before that it was hard to get up to top speed once I got past about 130 and had to change gears. I could go 0-155 everyday I visited Mexico with the 915. Not so with the 930. I can do 0-130 easily but it’s a little tougher to do 155 now. Of course I can cruise at 90 with 3000rpm. And ya I could do 180+ if I wanted.

Geronimo 10-06-2018 03:20 PM

But, even under stock power the 915 is on borrowed time, under boost you could tear it apart with little effort I imagine.

I would love to so a nice beefy 3.6L NA build but the 3.6L are stupid money for not that much power. Boost is the fix it seems for these anemic lil engines.

quattrorunner 10-06-2018 03:35 PM

Boost is a good key. Keep boost at around .7 bar and enjoy on a budget.
Raise it to .8bar and throw away the budget.

both my 915's have lived behind 300hp+ 3.6's for ten years of track work.
the key is boost by gear, not launching hard in first, etc, and of course beefing up the 915- plenty of parts available.
you won't need much boost anyway- 7-9 psi will give a near N/A power curve with a modern turbo, just gives it more oomph everywhere.
