Looking for the best 930 Tire/Wheel combo...

I'm sure this has been discussed 1027 times but my searches only show 10-15 year old threads and tires have changed A LOT since then...

Trying to finish up my 1978 Euro 930 with all the upgrades we could get from Brian B and still keep the factory Fuel Injection (aprox 450 hp).
Looking for the best tire wheel combo size that will give me the best in High Performance. I don't plan on tracking it (but I might...) and I live in Florida, so I want the best in Summer High Performance tires and don't care a lot about rain as I don't plan to drive it in the rain...
I'm guessing something in 17" but just don't have the institutional knowledge on what might be best...

Thoughts???

Thanks!

PS I did find this car online and it sure looks nice and is almost the sister of mine in guards red. Dont know who made the rims and tire sizes are 255/40-17 and 275/40-17

There are tons of threads on this already and you'll get as many recommendations as there are posters to this forum - with no 'optimal' wheel/tire combo except the one you think will work the best.

Post some pics of your car as a starting point. We're all glad to help.

Perhaps an initial thought? 17" max wheel diameter. I've tried 15, 16, 17, and 18's on my car.

15's are tough to find tires for. 16's are dwindling in option. 17's have a number of options, as to 18's. But, 18" wheels really create a narrow sidewall that makes for a harsh ride - track or street.

I run BBS e87's: 17x10 (rear) w/ 315/35-17 tires; 17x9 (front) w/ 255/40-17 tires.

Good luck.

You'll need some good tires to stick the power!
Wheels are totally a personal preference thing. Tire choices are pretty much restricted to 17" to 18" wheels in the widths that fill the fenders.
Grab some popcorn and have a look at this thread.

Even though my car came with 18's already installed, I think 17's look best on the car.

I love my Fikse’s 18’s as far as tires my new set is going to be Continental’s. I have them on the wife’s BMW and they are great. Here is a pic for reference.

Another option from the same guy who has the Ruf wheels for sale

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-used-parts-sale-wanted/1172735-fs-replica-fuchs-17x8-17x11-turbo-widebody-fitment-new.html
I have no affiliation, but do have a set of Ruf wheels on my 81 SC. Fuchs, BBS and Ruf, those are the proper wheels for a Porsche 911/930

Fikse Fuchs RSR 17x9/11 235/315. I spent the last decade thinking about the same issue and this is where I ended my search. To me this is classic Porsche wheel/tire perfection. But obviously I’m biased. A close second choice for me would have been a set of 16” Campagnolos in satin gold with Pirelli Corsa Classic tires as wide as I could fit. But wide tires in anything smaller than 17” have become very difficult to source and very expensive when you do find them.

The Toyo R888R is loud and wears terribly uneven, but holy **** do they stick. I've been through dozens of them and find myself going back after trying others.

A local friend put them on his 930 and drove twice the width of the lower 48 to RR7 and back. I believe he has 315s on the back with 13" Fikse wheels iirc

^^^ echo this. 888Rs are a pretty neat tire. incredibly sticky but, boy, the noise...only getting louder as they wear.

currently running Nitto 555 G2 XL on front and back. a nice tire that does a pretty good job while staying pretty quiet.

Agreed on the R888R. I run them on my modded 991 Turbo S. Phenominal tire and they are quiet until the tread wears low and only then do they start making some noise. I would never hear them on my 930 with the RarelyL8 headers + hoonigan muffler. Currently my BFG Gforce Sport Comp2 tires have plenty of tread, but when they run low I will consider R888R's with my stock 16 inch Fuchs. I see the R888R comes in 225 45 16 for the front and 245 45 16 rear. I currently run 225 50 16 fronts and 245 45 16 rears so not much of a change.

ou're on the right track with considering 17" wheels, especially for a high-performance, street-focused setup. Given the upgrades you’ve done and the fact that you’re not tracking it regularly, the right tire and wheel combo will make a big difference in handling, stability, and overall driving enjoyment.
Wheel Size:

For a 1978 Euro 930 with ~450hp, you’ll want a good balance of grip and responsive handling without compromising too much on comfort. A 17” wheel is a great choice because you get access to modern tire technology while still fitting well with the car's classic look.

Front wheels: 7.5” to 8” wide, typically with a 23mm offset. This will help maintain the factory look and fitment while allowing you to run a higher-performance tire.
Rear wheels: 9.5” to 10” wide, with a 25mm to 35mm offset. This gives you enough room for wider tires to better match your car’s power and provide a solid grip on the road.

The current tires are 225/40 - 18 and 265/35 - 18, I could go 10 wider to fill out the rim a little more.

Love my 17" Fikse's. I think 17's are the perfect fitment for the Gbody

These wheel and tire threads are always fun to follow.
I need to buy tires this year, I have waited way too long.
I currently have very old Pirelli 235/40ZR/17 and 275/40ZR/17 tires on 7x17 ET23 on the front and 9x17 ET15 on the rear.
I would love to replace these with comparable sized tires but know that I should upgrade to wider wheels if I want to stay with these tire sizes. Anyone buying Michelin these days? They have always been my favorite tire...need to do some research.
Everyone who posts a picture should specify their wheel specs and tire sizes for all to benefit.

My set up is 225/45-17 and 315/35-17 Toyo R888 on 17x8.5 and 17x11.5 wheels (I could go 12" on the rear wheels). I've run 235/275, 255/315, 225/275 but my current set up works the best for me. If I had less HP I might just run 275's in the rear but the look of the big meaty tires in the back is really cool too. For the street 225 on the front seems plenty good to me even for the occasional track day. Any bigger than that and the steering weight makes the drive less fun.

I tried the Nitto NT555 tires but slid around too much and went back to the Toyo R888's.

My 88 930 with the old school 17" Fikse with 315 x 35 rear and 235 X 45 fronts. The full size photo is from many years ago with daughter in law thinking of taking it out. Upgraded 993 twin turbo 12 plug motor by Steven Casper so for sure those rears are necessary.
