More Turbo Option ????'s
Hello all - thanks to advice given by members of this forum, I'm fairly certain that I am going to purchase a new turbo for my 1987 930 rather that get the stock 3ldz rebuilt (I am currently overhauling the engine - keeping it mostly stock save for Racewear hardware) . . . I have been in contact with Kevin of "Ultimate" with regard to options and pricing and such . . .
My question for all of you: given my goals (reliable but perhaps a little more powerful than stock . . . daily driver with occasional track-day use at Motorsport Ranch, Cresson TX - were I am a founding member) what turbo would you recommend (K27-7200)? What is the performance difference between the K27-7200 and the High Flow variety (the price of the high flow is MUCH greater)? Given the FORTUNE I am dropping on the 24K engine overhaul, the price for the 7200 seems good for me! As I mentioned earlier, mostly stock with the exception of hardware and muffler . . . Thanks! Kevin should steer you right with what you want to do. If you're losing traction on the slippery slope to big hp (and the higher powerband that comes with it) you could get something else, but if you just want a good reliable, more modern replacement for the 3LDZ, the 7200 sounds like the way to go.

As I understand it, the K27/7200 is very similar to the 3DLZ, just marginally better.
My $0.02? SC cams for a balance between off-boost response and better/more top-end (you get both), and a K27/HF. Much faster spool, way more mid-range and more top-end. More power, but no big step. However, Kevin doesn't do the HF anymore, so it's a choice between the S and the HFS. I figure that the S will spool faster, but not develop as much power up top, the HFS would take a little more to spool but just keep on going at the top. With a 4-speed and primarily street driving, I'd guess that the S might be a good selection. with a 5-speed, the HFS would be a shoo-in, I think.

Some folks are using the Garrett turbos. I don't know much about them, but they're an alternative.

There is a Garrett being made that's a bolt on but I forget who's selling it. I just don't believe they have the quality of the KKK turbos.

Thanks for the responces thus far . . . Ronnie |

If you are planning on running mostly stock, go with a true bolt in application. There is no sense in having to fab anything if your performance goals are near stock.
I have a new Kokeln turbo that I'm very happy with. It was truly a bolt on application as I believe the K27/7200 is. I know some here don't like the Kokeln, but you need to know your HP goals and choose accordingly.

Actually this is a little off. The 7200 or the K27S will run 1.5 seconds faster through the 2-6K RPM band over the 3LDZ and will add on average 38HP. They are not even close to being like a 3LDZ.
