I think the real difference between daily driving an SC/Carrera and a 930 boils down to the gearing.
I drove my SC widebody for many years with the 190WHP 3.0L before the 930 transplant. The modified 930 engine has more torque at a lower rpm than the 3.0L did and about DOUBLE the torque on boost. I kept the same 915 tranny - that for me is the key that makes this car a nice driver. The boost does not need to be used to squirt around in traffic. If I want to have the same fun as a 3.6L SWB car I simply gear down and run the RPMs up to 4K shifting gears often up and down as I go through the twisies. You never notice any lag and don't drop in and out of boost due to the close ratio gears. It's a hoot! You can throttle steer through the corners! A high HP 930 with the stock geared 4spd is a completely different animal. Made for high speeds and not comfortable in tight twisies or an Auto-X course. I Auto-X mine when I get the chance, high fun factor for little risk or dollars. Top end / highway? She can do 0-100mph in less than 10 seconds, 100-140mph in another 5 seconds. Would I go back? Are you kidding? All that being said I do not drive my car daily. Why? Soccer moms and SUVs. I wish I could.

If you look at Rory's journey to the dark side he gutted an SC before he figured out that it was a 930 that he was really after

This is kinda going towards the idea that I'm actually considering this. ~NOT!~ I was just wondering if any one has, but no one would probably fess up for fear of being flamed on here.
![]() I'm thinking of adding to the stable but if I get something nicer I would like to use the 930 around town more or get something not as nice and use that and leave the 930 for events/special occassions/etc. Actually, I'm thinking of a 996 with an aero kit to run around town in.

you could always get a boxster to use as a daily driver. course you would have to get a vaniity plate that says something like "really i'm not gay", or "no parking in rear" or something like that. not that there is any thing wrong with that...

That was funny, Ken! lol
Even though I have a few other vehicles, including some other high performance stuff, I always find an excuse to drive the 930...Even on Home Depot runs. |

This is actually what I'm leaning towards for running around town in. It's water cooled, so it's not a 'real' Porsche anyways. Right?
![]() Anyways, I'd be looking for it in White ext and tan/gray/blk int. Haven't found one yet to check out. Any leads? ![]() ![]()

^^^ That would suit me fine. I'm not getting rid of the 930 (my wife wouldn't let me anyway), I'm just looking to add something to the stable that I won't mind driving in the rain, the heat, or rush hour.
Yellow and red are off my list though. Now if could just focus on finishing my kitchen so there's room in the garage .

Custom 930
|
My first drive in a Porsche was back in 1997, a new 911 4S from a P dealership. The sales rep told me where to drive it for some twisty curved roads. My wife was with me and no salesperson and we came back 30 minutes later with grins on our faces from ear to ear.
![]() I said to my wife... I want to buy a Porsche but it has to a faster Porsche! I want to buy a turbo! 5 years later I bought a Guards Red 930. The 930 was way quicker than the new 911 4S was and to this day I don't regret my decision. It's getting quicker as time goes on too. Any Porsches I drive in are not the same unless I hear the high pitched whistle and feel the surge pin me to my seat as the turbo spools to max. There is no compromise... it must be a turbo, the bigger the better!!! ![]()

Drive a 930 once, particularly on the track and you will never forget it. I have never been in the newer twin turbos so I can't compair. They look more civilized. The 930 is not civilized, I think thats what trips my trigger.

Bill, I did it, to find myself looking for excuses to drive the 930 insted of the 911. Yes, I would love to drive the 930 daily, but it would not be the same. There is a mistike that no other car would give you. I have had six 911's through the years, they come and go; however, the 930 stays and it is part of the family...

I traded my '87 911 Targa for a guy's '87 930 who had a teenage son turning 16 problem. We met and swapped cars for a test drive. Man was I in for a surprise! I was afraid he would say no but he liked the 5 spd and the more sedate acceleration. We completed the deal and I have never considered going back.

No, I paid $5K more but he let me keep the manual, tool kit and the tire pump kit. I was real happy with it.
