Detonation/JESUS!!
Greetings:
I finally came back to n.y. a week ago, after spending over 2 months in Charleston S.C. (Great City). I started the 3.3 turbo..All new plugs-NGK R5671A-7-gap-.40, new fuel pumps msd-6al-&coil., fuel accumulator. maganecor plugs..new oil...stock-intercooler,hks-fuel-enrcih.b&b-dual exhaust./sc.cams-7006 Trbo.etc.etc. So..the last week, the car starts immediately...fantastic...nice - cool weather, I let it run a little, until the oil gauge starts moving...no problem...I don't have the car registered yet, So I can't drive it..I Took it around the block from my house just to open it up a little....No problem boost comes in perfect & sounds great....Let it run a little, then shut it down.. Yesterday...late afternoon,, quite warm outside, same thing no problem starting..etc..etc. I noticed a little smoke come out of the exhaust...Took it around the block...Immed in 2nd..I feel the and hear the Detonation...mther/ffferr..... Man, Wtf... I immed., bought it back to the house/garage..Where it started shaking/conked out. I started pulling out all the plugs/and cleaned them all.....They were med.blk/ Not oily.---The plugs looked a little fouled. It took awhile//What a *****... When I was away, I told my sis. to start the car every week and run it for ten min or so...for the last 2 months...& the only time i drove the car was from the mech's shop to my house approx...20min-hwy drive..approx-2months ago before I went away... The felt great...boost-pull--all was good... I am not sure what to think...I think just starting it and not driving it is good thing. Will find time this week to get it registered. Work is my only interference.. Any suggestions what i should do or change in the car??? Most appreciated. Thnxs Walt |

If you were having problems before in the 80's, I'd think there might be another problem. Could be running thecar for 10 minutes once a week wasn't enough without a fuel stabilizer. Can you drain the gas and replace with fresh gas? Replace your fuel filter as well (might be some sediment).
Could be stuck fuel injectors as well. |

Cranking the car in the garage and run it for 10' once a week creates more harm than help. First of all, it would never reach proper operation temps. I would rather leave it alone for the entire storage duration. Moisture accumulates everywhere creating condensation/sludge/soot/rust... When you cranck a car and mainly a turbo car (i.e. 930) you MUST bring it up to temperature and at least once a drive use WOT to full boost to clean valves and blades, in that way it stays clean and ready to go. +1 to miguel, it doesn't help much to crank these older cars and let them idle while in storage. Probably no real harm done aside from sooting up the plugs, valves, and possibly a little fuel dilution in the oil... The detonation was probably from heat soak in the intercooler. The longer a 930 idles, the more heat gets into the intercooler core. It's always best to make several light throttle, but high RPM pulls to move a lot of air through the core, before making any hard accelerations after extended idling. I've been guilty of the same thing in several different 930's. The intercooler gets HOT w/ no considerable airflow...
As for your running problem, I would run a really good CIS pressure test, and replace those new plugs, again. Once they have been contaminated, they are never the same, especially if they ever misfire and leave a carbon trace... Good luck!

Greetings:
Thanks for all the replies...I haven't driven the car for 9 years and just restored it (2 fuel pumps, accumualtor, plugs, oil, filter, gas filter, emptied gas tank,msd6al ignition.&coil.etc..etc.).. I then went away for 2 months for work and didn't have plates..I told my sis just to back it out of the garage and let it run for 10mins or so..The car as far as I know started on a dime with the new ignition. It never did that before with the old ignition box... 2 weeks ago when I got back, the outside temps. were cool and I started it up..no problem. Took it for a ride around the block. BOOST was on and strong...Last week a different story, outside temps.much warmer and did let it run a bit. Again took it around the block..I had the HKS-fuel enrichmnt off..Immed in 2nd,,boost was building and at approx-3500rpms++..It started to break up..I Believe letting it idle and with the warm weather didn't help me..PLus i still have a stock intercooler...Took out the plugs immed. and cleaned them up..One of the plugs did have a small round ball on it..The rest had carbon on them...I chked for any boost leaks/hoses..None for what I can see. I believe just starting up the turbos and just idle doesn't work well. You have to drive them and open them up.. Again proab. more damage than good just start and turn off..... Will bring the car to my mech. to chk timing..26degrees/4000rpm. Heat soak does not help... Thnxs again. Walt |

Greetngs:
Well, last week finally got my plates and ready for the road. On Sat morning, started it up, no problem, all good,. Driving nice, no boost,,Finally merging on the HWY-wanting to open it up...Watching the rpms rise2-3pm..shifitng nicely not hard..Waiting for boost..Nothing, ok..Downshift--Again, rpms. rise. to 3pm..and stay there..Flooring the car..nothing..OK..play it safe...Stay in 5thgear and just cruise it to the shop--15min-20min drive....NOT HAPPY..... Feels like detonation or hestitation...To f-in mad to think...straight.. Ok-finally get to my shop..Talk to my mech...(details) He takes it for ride...He comes back and says its not detonation its hesitation..Breakdown.. He turns on the HKS-FUEL ENRICH-to test mode..when getting on it...Then rpms rise...(like a nitrous feel) So this is a good test. The 7th injetor shoots out during the test mode (rpms rise) Its not spark, not timing, not plugs, Something is stuck -intake/plunger when trying to floor it in gear..etc.etc... It gets worse when the car gets warmer. Its at the shop...That's that. Wait and see.... Any ideas, input on the this Thnxs. Walt |

After reading/searching I found maybe its the overboost senor unit/switch. I never replaced this part. The symptons sound the same in the article I just read....Keep my fingers crossed.. Here is the test for the Boost sending unit.. hard to read but the point is when you remove the lead it should deflect the gauge to max with the ignition on.

Finally!!!! My mech found the problem/hesitation. After extensive search-wires-plugs ignition-fuel-fuel mpumps-sensors/relays-wires/wastegate..etc-etc..Nothing!!! Then chked the FUEL HEAD!!!! The piston was getting stuck and also the plunger. My mech didn't get into details and just smirked. When I got into his shop on Sat. morning he had my car on his inspection/dyno, He just finished up tuning/fuel etc..etc..Again did not go into details...just smirked..He told me just go for a ride. To make it short in 3rd gear with my 915-transmission--(rebuilt/stronger) I hit 1bar at 4000rpms..No problem!!..(Stock intercooler) I did immed notice my HKS-FUEL ENRICHNT dials did have a major change. My felt very linear..almost like A strung V8--WHAT PULL!! Under my previous posts 911sc turbo pics. U can see what i have put into the engine..Vey happy for now!! Here r some more pics of my car and my mech's car, he also has a 996tt epl tuned 24/18pkg,, Walt ![]() ![]() ![]()

Congrats!!!
Same thing happened to me years back when I had to put some wierd name gas in the middle of nowhere - no choice or runnig out of it. Next time I tried to crank the car it was all gummed up... drained the tank, put fresh "good" gas, cleaned the plunger and everything got back to normal. |
