Which MSD to get for my 89 930?

Any advice? I want (need) to replace my Permatune and want a simple bolt on MSD.
From what I've read, I seem not to need a tachometer adapter but am not sure.
Here on Pelican a MSD 6200 is listed but everybody seems to recommend a 6 AL. Are they the same?
I'm a bit confused as to what to get. Also do I need a rev limiter? My car is a simple daily driver (almost).

The 6AL has a built in rev limiter. That's what I would use as a minimum, but others are using one that can control timing with boost iirc.

There is a new 6AL-2 which is smaller and easier to fit. It is also available in a fully programmable or manual setting model.

Do I need anything else with this AL2 (tachometer adapter, rev limiter, ...) ? Is it best to order it directly from MSD?

I would also change coil when going for a MSD.
If you want to place the coil where the stock is, I would go for 8222.

I tried 8202 on mine, but it started to leak oil since it was not vertical mounted. The result with low oil level in the coil was cut of ignition in left turns :-(

With the 6 AL2, MSD recommends the 8207 although they say that it works with almost any coil.

Funny you say that...

I noticed mine leaking slowly - had upside down for many years.

R u sure the coil did that making left hand turns??? My car did the same thing(now& then) Always wondered why it did that.

Hi Walt,
Yes, 100% sure it was the coil. I scratch my head and checked all other stuff first, but when I had the coil out to switch it with the stock, I noticed the leak of oil, had made the kernel inside to slide up and down inside when shaking. Probably leading to shortcut, when turning hard.

Mine was mounted in the original bracket, but had it places with wires upwards. Did not make too much mess since it was not leaking much. But enough to make it shortcut.
Never ohm'ed it. Just replaced it witch a new MSD coil.
8222 does not have oil kernal, but epoxy filled.

I was running the 6AL on my 911 using the blaster high vibration coil (mounted in the original position upside down is ok on the high vibration coil)and it was running great. Isn't the rev limiter in the tach on these later cars? not sure... I was not using the tach adaptor and it was ok.

Guys,

Might be able to help a little here.

For a direct replacement for you present ignition system use a MSD 6AL-2. Great ignition and virtually bulletproof. No programming capability just plug and play.

If your going to play, I went with the MSD 6530 Programmable. I'm using it because I want the flexability of programming my timing curve and also backing off timing under boost by programming boost retard.

Both these units will require installing the MSD 8920 Tac Adapter and a MSD coil.
I would use the MSD 8207 Coil. Make sure you seat all the plug wire and coil wire completely and correctly.

Doing the install you can disconnect the engine harness connector that plugs into your original CD ignition and use insulated male spade connectors to interface the MSD wiring into that connector. In most instances you will have a rev limiting rotor in your distributor. You will need to replace that rotor with a non rev limiting rotor
or you will burn out the rev limit feature and be walking home.

Porsche standard replacement rotor Bosch Pn 04038:

NAPA alternative rotot (half the price):

MSD 6530 mounted on the bulkhead in the back seat behind the driver seat:

I added a terminal block where the old CD was to wire in the MSD:

I pulled a switch loop up to the dash and mounted a switch to use as a theft deterent

If I can be of any help just give me a call or a PM. 260-925-0219

Thanks Cole for your help. If I understand correctly, the Porsche standard replacement rotor Bosch Pn 04038 is a non rev limiting rotor, right?

930 Cab:

I think that is actually the Bosch part number, I have always used the NAPA part, works fine. You should be able to find the Porsche part number here with our hoste.

At long last, the mystery switch has been revealed so I can now borrow your car any time I'm in the neighborhood.

Is that an old DynaTune gauge I see, which gives millivolt output from your O2 sensor? Precurser to todays AFR gauges. Or some other secret Cole weapon?
