I had my Rob Siegel European Electrics manual ready to crack open to the alternator chapter but went for the easy stuff first; lo and behold, a loose nut on the chassis ground strap. Big roadblock for electrons. Paul swung the geardrive 13mm wrench so he could say he fixed it. I was grateful we didn't have to pull the alternator. John.

starter issue?
My starter ring was so chewed up it was unserviceable. We got a new flywheel starter ring from porsche. I wanted a new starter but my mechanic said the starter was a ok. After reading this thread I'm wondering if the alternator is a persistent issue on some 930s. My starter ring has now been replaced twice in and my 930 has 51,000 miles..
