I think you should go a little easier with the "blue", apply with a stencil brush and just colour the surface.

Thanks, much appreciated!
You're absolutely right...I took that pic after I globbed it on. I used an acid brush to remove the excess before I inserted the valve.

After backtracking for nearly three months to modify my cam housings, I'm almost back to where I was.
But this gave me some time to make my own top dead center tool. Cost $20, worked perfect... I also had time to fabricate my own digital degree wheel. The rotary encoder was $50 and another $20 for the aluminum "fixturing"... Used the TDC tool to find calculated TDC... Set the DC43X-102 cams at 4.6mm lift at overlap for the 1-2-3 side... I was able to hit 4.58mm lift at overlap for the 4-5-6 side... Onward...

Would you be willing to write up a DIY on how you made the tools? I'm sure I could figure it out but a guide is always nice.

This should be the definitive build guide for a Mg case engine.

I bought a TDC tool from Amazon. It's got an internal thread of 3/8"-16 tpi... ![]() Removed the "stock" screw and tacked it to an 8" length of 3/4" diameter DOM tubing. Nothing magical about this, it just happened to be in front of me at the hardware store. A schedule 40 steel pipe would have been cheaper... On the other end, I tacked a washer and a 3/8" nut so I could snug the tool down. I drilled out the threads so the threaded rod could move freely... Last is a 12" threaded rod with a slight chamfer at the piston end with a 3/8"-16 tpi nut welded on the other end. I had planned to use another 3/8" nut as a locknut, but I didn't need it. Plus, I forgot to buy one... Overall, this contraption cost about $20. I could've made it for $15 if I was more frugal. I'll post the degree wheel when I have a chance...

Nicely done! I tried to make this but failed to get the 3mm threaded shaft on the angle finder connected before I mangled the circuit board. I ended up with some scrap. I did have a nice magnet attachment to the crankshaft though, did you use a magnet? Shane

Back to where I was three months ago...
Rockers installed, valve lash set... Lower gasket installed... Lower valve cover installed, modified for twin plug by Henry at Supertec... Upper gasket installed... This is my engine. There are many like it, but this one is mine. Valve covers installed. Cerakoted "Barrett Bronze" by Shaun at Tru6... Custom cam housing oil lines by Brad at 911rennen.com... Long block basically done! Updates will be slow in coming for a while. Onward...

Moving at a snail's pace now...
Installed the oil cooler. Refurbished by Pacific Oil Cooler... Shaun at Tru6 Cerakoted some parts. The color is Carbon Black F-102... Installed the engine lifting bracket... Sanded off the Cerakoting where the fan housing contacts the alternator and case for a good ground... Fan Housing installed. Used a couple of titanium socket cap bolts in the "clip"... Onward...

Started fitting the fan shroud from DP Motorsports. The quality isn't quite what I hoped for, but I'm a sucker for those rivets!
I think I need to notch this section out...the coil mounting point is causing the shroud to push up a little... Onward...

Ward, you're not installing oil-fed tensioners? This is the time to do it.

Nothing wrong with mechanical tensioners. We have seen plenty of hydraulic later style tensioners fail….

Try not, Do or Do not

The problem with pressure fed tensioner failure promted Jerry Woods to make a kit to prevent tensioner collapse. Tensioners themselves balance out when proper (wide) idler arms are used. This engine has the Supertec idler update but factory ones work just as well. Keep in mind that these engine vibrate and those vibrations create stresses. In this case on all the plumbing associated with pressure fed tensioners are at risk. There are 4 more crimps to leak, two banjo bolts that can come loose or break and the flimsy hard lines can break under the vibrational stresses. Then there is even a tiny o-ring trying its best to keep the chain cover from leaking. Simply put, it's a toss-up.

Insodently, the introduction of full width idler arms coincided with the advent of pressure fed tensioners. Supertec update Factory w/DP4 update bushing

Yes, the Supertec updated tensioner arms are in there, too...
