Dadgummit guys, I wish I had done some research before I shipped John my two sets of camshafts. Since January I haven't heard a peep out of John and after repeated attempts to contact John I am throwing in the towel.

John if you are reading this please return my camshafts and I will simply go my merry way.

It is painfully obvious to me now that John is just not interested in pip-squeak work like mine and that is fine with me. I am okay with it. Just take five minutes and pack my camshafts and send them to back to me.

I will get someone else to help me with my project.

Thanks in advance,

Henry

In Dec 2012, I had been corresponding with John about regrinding my 3.2 cams to 964 profile. He said about one week turnaround could be expected. I sent him the cams in January and had them back in a week and half. The quality appears to be top notch. Hope his other customers will have the same good experience I had.

Hcarraro 04-10-2013 12:58 PM

Well good for you. I wasn't as lucky. Hope by the way is not a predictable business process.

I sent my camshafts in January as well and after an email January 22 from John with his proposed next steps I have heard nothing and have received nothing.

Like I said my pip-squeak job for two sets of camshafts isn't worth messing with. That is fine. Just return the camshafts I am not interested in any further discussions.

I emailed John one last time yesterday after posting and well blow me over he contacted me almost immediately. He said he was returning my camshafts today via FedEX no charge.

I am not sure what happened nor do I care. I am just glad to have my parts back.

I called him ....asked him what was going on....every story has two sides but at least this is resolved.

Thank for your help. You are very much appreciated. And here I thought my final email made it happen. You are absolutely right about the old saying "no matter how flat the pancake there will always be two sides." I am not interested in airing dirty laundry. I am just glad I am getting my parts returned.

Henry, please don't give me the credit. John's a good guy and sometimes a different perspectives makes good things happen.

I have been following this thread with interest, mainly as I am looking for a set of cams for my long term project (yeah, the 6 speed Carrera). Certainly John has been responsive to my emails, it seems like his billet cams offer a good product at a reasonable price and I was planning to go forward with him.

Now, to be fair, I am in absolutely no rush to get the cams in my hands as I am probably a year away from the engine build....just collecting parts for my retirement.

I gather from this and other threads that John's cams are very good and high quality, the only issue is speed and consistency of delivery times.

Well, some that have posted in this thread, and threads on the 911 Forum, have said that they never got anything at all. . .

My JD - Camgrinder Experience Thus Far

Here's my perspective (for what it's worth).

I'm rebuilding a 3.2l with particular performance goals. I shot John an Email (inquiry from from his website) a few nights ago. He responded same day, recommending a couple of cam profiles that I was able to research on Pelican to see how they worked out for other builds & get a better feel for performance.

Based on our interaction & what I found through my research, I have no doubt he's the go to guy to help me make the engine I want.

I have basically had the same experience and have arrived at the same conclusion.

Strange that I missed this whole thread. I sent him a pair of 3.2 cams to be re-gound to 964 and he made good on his promise to me. I don't think I even followed up. I tracked my package and he reworked them and sent them back. His turn around time was about a week as I recall.

Very pleased with his work.

Perhaps he gets really busy from time to time.

just sent john $ for my billet gt2 cams. he said i will recieve in 3 weeks with shipping as he has no prepped billets. bet you i see em at the end of the month to start the semi- monster build. SmileWavy

I have not heard back from him in 2 months. Same thing he said...10 days turn around. I have used him many times before without communication problems. I shall wait, just like with AL REED. Must be nice to be able to run a business like this.

I charge $35 each to machine the snout to accept a bolt. Send the SC cams. I will start on a set I have here if you like.
The 993 cams can be a nightmare in the early engines. Some have a little different front snout than the early engines,
and the timing gear set up does not fit.

Can you change the large nut to a newer style bolt on the Sc cams? The 330's don't have the drive either. I also may also be able to get a set of 993 cams with no drive on them from a buddy. I'd like to save the 330's if possible. Time is of the essance, as I would like to do the swap after Christmas. I will send out the cams this week once we figure out the best choice. I'm in Canada, but ship from NY state. Philip

I would have to add the rear drive on the SC cams. (add $165) If the 330's have the drive, I would send those in.
Its $345 to regrind the cams, a lot cheaper than $895 for new cams even if you have to add the drive.

the 993 SS is closer to the 964 than the GT2 Evo style cams. I make them on a wide lobe center to keep the idle quality.
I might be able to put the grind on the 330 cams. Can you get the casting number from them?
If you order new cams right now, I will would ship them between Xmas and New years. Grinding your 330 cams
would be a few days once they are here.

John, Can you grind me something that will still keep the torque midrange. Can you do a sort of street grind 993. I hear alot of guys complain that they loose idle with the GT cams. Also will need a drive for the scavange pump. Would it be possiblle to have in the next month or so? Is this something that you have the cores for? Or would my 330 cams do? Philip

Sounds about right. The SC and 330-SC cams are good for low speed power in a turbo. Typically up to 430-440 whp and 6200 rpm they are done. Above that
level a 964 works better. To hit 575, I would look at a 993SS profile. Its a touch bigger than the 964 and will still idle and spool well, especially with 8-1 compression.

Hello John, I am running a GT35R turbo with twin scroll 1.75" headers. 1.2 bar max boost with HKS boost controller. I would like to get 550-575 HP. Proberly at 500+ right now, but have too much torque down low/tire spin. I have a set of Elgin 330 cams, on my bench, but would like to have a proper recomendation, maybe a custom grind. thanks for your reply. Philip

how much power are you looking to make?

John, the tracking shows you received my cams last Dec. I have tried many emails/phone calls, and you do not answer. Send my cores back if you don't want to do the job. Philip

John did my 964 grind for my 74 911....and I was very happy with the work and turn around time....I believe Henry is right, John is a good guy...but there might be other factors at work here.
