I can't believe this is true. I've been a close friend of shannon's since he was a froshman in HS and I was Jr. We've kept in touch for over 17 years. I was just @ his condo a few weeks ago and he was showing me pictures from his last ride (I forget where he went, I was in a hurry) I really wish I would have stayed longer. His mom sent me this link when I talked to her earlier last night. I have some pictures I will post later when I get home. I know I still have one of him on his 1st motorcycle (that I sold him back in 1990) It was a yamaha Seca 400 that started it all. I just can't believe he's gone. Shannon if your able to read this, your really loved man. We'll all be @ your service next weekend to say goodby

I met Shannon in January of 2000 while working for Knowledgenet. He was my first friend in Arizona.

So many people have expressed so many kind words and stories on this and other posts. It's really out of a need to release express something, anything that I'm even contributing here. We've been close friends ever since we met, and I'm flooded with my own memories of him although I don't ride and that was probably what he loved to do the most.

When I think of him, I'll think of a guy who lived as himself more than any other human I've ever met, an uninhibited and very open book, sharing, charismatic...funny and often innappropriately appropriate. There is no way for me to include even a fraction of my thoughts, but:

I'll think about off roading with him in his Isuzu trooper invariably on an almost empty tank of gas. Al, you can speak to some alternate outcomes, but it always seemed to work out for us the times I was out with him.

I'll remember driving through a blizzard and finding an abandoned cabin up near flagstaff where we stayed for the afternoon using boards from walls to start a fire in the decrepit fireplace. I'll remember soaking up countless hours of sun with him at the pool outside his condo, getting in trouble when trixie was caught swimming in that pool.

I'll remember a guy who always made my days a bit better and a bit more like a sitcom when he'd just show up and come in.

I'll remember shots of wild turkey over too many games of pool to count.

I'll remember his stories, his cooking, his pictures, loading him up with new music...

This is all really personally devastating, and my thoughts go out to every person on here who knew him in all your varying degrees. I can't stop thinking about this, and I hope I don't anytime soon. There's a big void I still can barely get my head around.

I love the fact that someone quoted hunter s. Thompson and I couldn't think of anything more appropriate. Thank you to everyone on here for your thoughts...it's amazing and powerful to realize all the lives he's touched besides mine.

Well, it's been a little over a week now and the overall sentiment is amazing. I remember waking up that morning with a general bad attitude for whatever reason and decided to take it out on my motorcycle. Not a good attitude for blasting out of the garage at 7:30 am with the intent of seeing how fast I could get up the 154. Anyway, I logged on to check the forum, something I never do in the mornings, and found this thread. Whew. Left the garage at a somewhat more reasonable pace and backed off a notch or two on the plan and had a good ride. Thanks.

I only rode with Shannon and the group for part of one day on his California trip and had a good ride then, too.

He was obviously one the good guys.

Your words of support, thoughts and prayers had been a great source of comfort to Shana's parents. Shana was a very rich man indeed when it came to friends.

Shana was rich in another way that you don't know about. In a world where many immediate families have trouble connecting; Shana was part of a very large, very loving extended family. He has a sister, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews in Oklahoma, Texas, Illinois, Kansas, and Wyoming.

Shana was not the first Nunley decendant with a sense of adventure. His great grandfather Nunley came to Oklahoma in a covered wagon several years before Oklahoma became a state. His father, Noel was a bush pilot in Alaska for 17 years. Our family in Wyoming (here after refered to with great fondness as "The Wild Bunch"), not only hunted but guided in the wilderness country outside of Yellowstone for many years. They were confirmed Harley Men for many years. They have more bear stories than I can count-and they are all true.

That Spirit of adventure had spanned the generations. A few years ago one of "the wild bunch" became a grandfather. Little Kyle had his first Harley leather jacket before he was 4 months old and when he came home from the hospital was greeted with a very tiny specially made pair of chaps to honor the "western flavor" of our family. On the other end of the scale, Shana's beloved grandfather Elzia, for his 80th birthday, accompanied me and another cousin when we hauled horses from Oklahoma to Wyoming to spend 2 plus weeks riding in the high country (and I do mean high, 12,000 feet and above) with the "wild bunch". We rode on some of the most beautiful, challenging trails imaginable. We were never in the saddle less than 7 hours a day and some days 9. In some places we were on narrow trail with drop offs of 2000-4000 feet. Elzia at 80 said "it was awsome". We may have our faults but we are not dull. Shana was very loved and we will all miss him terribly.

I want you, his friends to know something about us because I fear that we have been misrepresented as a family. I am also requesting in behalf of Shana's parents that these and the other websites that were intended to honor Shana remain that way. They have been a great source of comfort for Shana's parents and many other family members. THIS IS NOT THE TIME, THE PLACE, OR THE FORUM FOR DIRTY LAUNDRY". Some private family matters should remain that: private. Shana's parents have enough very tramatic and painful memories that they will now have to carry to their graves. Let these sites remain a source of comfort and not add more hurt to an already overwhelmingly painful situation.

I am going to be direct. It is not my intent to be unkind in any way. People have a right to their beliefs and that should be respected. I have been very fortunate in my life to have traveled to many strange and wonderful places (my other passion). In every other culture that I have been exposed to there has been some recognization of a "higher power" and "after life", whether it was in my life time or an ancient time. I am personally a christian. (OK, no one panic and run screaming from the room, Hear me out.) I have more flaws than the memory on my computer can hold. (The lord is big enough not only to take a joke, but to play one; look at the platypus.)

I don't believe the statement that "God was not with Shana" is true. The lord is with us in everything. It doesn't matter whether we are in church or a bar. He may not like everything we do, but he doesn't abandon us because of it. He was the one who granted us "free will". He must have know some of us would make mistakes along the way.

Our judgement lies in the hands of God, as it should. No person, christian or not, has the wisdom to see deep in the heart of another person and pass judgement. We are not judged on lifestyle, language, bad judgement, or a "walk on the wild side" (which as far as most of us flawed types go is real lucky.)

Shana was a still a young man. It takes a lot of living to gain the wisdom to get us through all the pitfalls of life. In his zest for life and enthusiasum he still had much to learn. I wish he could have stayed with us longer . For all his flaws his was bright, funny, generous, and had a love of life that was almost contagious.

FOR NOEL, JILL AND SHEREE: I am at complete peace in turning Shana's very special "spirit" over to the wise, merciful, and loving arms of the Lord.

FOR AL and TJ: You opened your home and your hearts to Shana. You are not to blame in any way for what happened. You had counseled Shana along with both of his parents to slow down, that he was "pushing the envelope too far". You have not only stood by his parents during this terrible time, I believe you have helped carry them.

FOR ANNA (Shana's girlfriend): I am so very sorry for your loss and pain. Thank you from the whole family for all the help and support you have offered his parents at this time.

FOR SHEREE: I am so sorry for your loss. During the time Shana lived in Edmond I really thought of him as a little brother. ( I know because I was endlessly harrassed when "Top Gun" came out. I know I took him at least 3 times.) One of the hardest things for me in accepting this is most of my memories of him are of that little boy with the mischievous grin. It is times like this that family means the most. I love you always.

It is very hard to find words to comfort at a time like this. This helps me, I hope it helps someone else.

I am another one of Shana's cousins from Oklahoma. Just wanted to say a big 'Thanks!' to everyone who has posted on this thread. I have laughed and cried many times over the last week reading and am really looking forward to meeting those who go to the Memorial on Saturday, my brother Tim and I will both be there.

I asked Shana's folks if they still had an old pic of Shana and me with a coyote I called up and Shana shot when he was maybe 14 years old. They did and it's attached here....I laugh out loud looking at it now and I bet Shana would too.

Shushana Dean Nunley, 31, of Phoenix, Ariz. died in Payson March 16, 2005. He was born Nov. 16, 1973 in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Mr. Nunley, otherwise known as Shannon, was appreciated by friends and family for his overwhelming zest for life. His passion for life carried over to many areas including his working in the computer industry.

He knew that his purpose was to experience the good things in life that included motorcycling with friends, flying with his Dad in his Super Cub, cooking and entertaining for friends and family, and his chocolate lab, Trixie.

He was a self-employed computer consultant who loved traveling, photography and hunting.

He is survived by his parents, Noel and Jill Nunley of Phoenix; sister, Sheree Lee De'Leon of Wichita Falls, Texas; maternal grandfather, H. Dean Gutshall of Sheffield, Ill.; and paternal grandmother, Lera Nunley of Duncan, Okla.

A celebration of life service will be held at noon, Saturday, April 2 at the home of Alan and Terrie Lescarbeau. Please contact Shannon's parents, Noel and Jill Nunley or Alan and Terrie Lescarbeau.

Arrangements handled by Messinger Payson Funeral Home.
