I doubt any of the bigger exhaust manufacturers (akrapovic, remus, laser) are making systems that generate less power than stock. so no matter what you get you are probably gonna get some kind of HP bump. I also think most R12 owners who are looking for an exhaust are looking for better sound and aesthetics, as the dual pig anus certainly leaves a lot to be desired. If the prime objective of exhaust purchase was HP, they probably wouldn't own a BMW twin in the first place.

Statement coming from a guy that would reuse Head Gaskets

Shreddr; I would want to buy the best exhaust money could buy, Some are better then others, The Meat and potatoes would be in the dyno room!

I ordered new head gaskets!

Some riders might just be looking to cut weight, in that case they would be looking for the lightest exhaust money can buy. it all depends on what your prime objective is. some riders might just want to ditch that horrid stocker, and are looking for the cheapest alternative that looks good. i am guessing one of the aftermarket units puts out the biggest boost in HP, but its not like 10HP vs 2HP for the next best.

Couldn't agree more. Ultimately I'm looking for a little more sound, a little more hp, a little less weight, and finally to personalize the bike a bit.

My problem is I think all this stuff looks good and provides similiar real world results. So one day I find myself leaning towards the HPE stuff, then I start wasting time on the internerd come across some pics and sound clips and find myself lusting after the Laser system.

A year ago this would have been easier - I'd plump for the HPE system - but given the current state of the eceonomy I'm finding I think a little longer and harder before parting with the money.

That was one of the draws of the Laser system. Aside from looking very sano (IMO) they have a great rep and their stuff is at an appealing price point.

Where I disagree with you Shreddr is on the stock exhaust. I actually kind of like it (beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that - just ask my wife). It is, if nothing else, unique. Which then, having said that, makes me wonder if I should just leave the stock exhaust and buy the HPE header from Sierra BMW.

Aye karumba, am I an indecisive git or what?

Or just buy the Remus header. Very clean looking and gets rid of the cat. When I bought my bike they just had it drop shipped to my house straight from Remus in California. You might be able to do the same.

sound advice, and if you ever want to go with a belly pan, the HPE is really gonna limit your options, if there are any

Update

1. HPE headers MKII (not on sale for the moment) are required for belypan MKII (looks exactly like the HP2S thing). All these by the Man in Black (Julius Ilmberger).

2. HPE end can = coolest ever design (what do you expect from Italy?).

3. Personally I don't like (at all) the "curvy" look of most headers (a bit...erm... 60's aesthetics). Obviously HPE address this with a gorgeous "straight" pipework (routing : under the sump).

My advise > (a) case no bellypan > HPE end can (b) case bellypan > go to 1.

PS: my experience on dynojet 150 > OEM bike = 107 rwbhp, full HPE = 116 rwbhp (+ fewer "holes"), full HPE + RB3 + K&N = 127/128 rwbhp (+ absolutely linear).
