NJ motorcycle registration and inspection

I just got a letter in the mail from Governor Christie informing me I will no longer need to get my motorcycle inspected, AND that I MUST remove the REGISTRATION decal from the license plate. There is more info available here:

NJ RIDESAFE.ORG: Motorcycle Safety Training

It sounds like mandatory rider training isn't far away

Gee, less regulation and more individual responsibility by learning to properly ride a motorcycle, what blasphemy. What a difference between the Dem. and the Rep. leadership!! I'm sure the Democrats were sure that increasing the burden on Motorcyclists via vehicle inspections would make the roads safer. How can anyone argue that rider training will make the motorcyclists of the state safer?? When my daughter asks for a motorcycle drivers licence I won't let her until she has taken a MSF or ABATE riders course so she has some ammunition to defend herself from the many hazards that await her on the road. Sounds to me that Gov. Christie should be commended.

No registration necessary? I get the insp. but not the Reg. revenue loss. Unless they are just saving $ on the tag itself.

Bye bye inspection.
I'm not pulling the sticker off. The plate is designed for two stickers and mine's good until 2012-f'em.

I still need to register it, I just don't have to display the sticker. this means no registration revenue will go into the production and mailing of the sticker. the cops will just look up your license plate in their database anyway, sticker or not. it sounds like the inspection stations are on the block as well, cars will only need emissions going forward, and if the inspection stations are closed, then the local dealers and gas stations will pick up the revenue. so less spending at the state level, more income to local service providers. this actually sounds sustainable

No additional money-it was covered in the cost of the registration but you still had to go get that cursory inspection. The biggest hassle was 4 square inches required of helmet reflectors-like I'm going to put reflectors on the Corsair. Had to keep an old helmet just for that stupid regulation. Jerks.

Talking to some guys in Calabogie last week at a track day. I knew they got raped for insurance, but also found out in Quebec, registration runs over $1000/ year for a Motorcycle!!!!!!!

The Canadians do things a bit different. I don't understand the whole thing, but their vehicle registrations cover the registration, insurance and health insurance costs. I was talking to a couple Canadian motorcyclists that passed through here on trikes a while back and I don't remember all the details, only that their system was unusual. Sorry, I've used 'Canadian' and 'unusual' in the same sentence.

"Unusual" suits me OK. Not quite unique, but far from ordinary.

Costs vary - lower in rural setting and higher in urban settings. They also vary from city to city and province to province.

With a 42% discount for safe driving, $1000 will buy a year of basic M/C insurance and 10-12 tanks of gas in my neck of the woods.

If I bin the bike, it's on me ..... but my rehab is covered.

The motorcycle inspection in NJ is a joke. I'm glad I don't have to ride to Secaucus, NJ every year just to press the horn button.

Florida got rid of their inspections years ago after it was exposed for the money making scam it was. It was never about polution only making a buck, same as everywhere else I'd guess. We had big ugly stickers on the right forkleg.

ABATE's course IS the MSF course. MSF created it, ABATE administers/delivers it
It varies from state to state on the administration/presentation of the course, but most all states are using the MSF curriculum.

As a former NJer Let me say this:

1. We all know most bikes are garage queens which rarely see the road. Yet a lot of paperwork has to be done for them just the same.

2. Christie is foregoing a little bit of revenue, but saving a lot of time at the DMV by not requiring inspections. Realistically, maybe they will even cut some DMV staff....saving somebody, somewhere, some money (I believe the NJ DMV is now privately held, no?)

3. Yes, the inspections are something of a joke. How many straight pipes are there? Are they legal? Do they pass inspection? (Many, No, and of course) I remember taking my R50 to the inspection station in the 1990s and the guy asked me to show him my right signal...I held up left hand. Pass. Bikes before the '70's seldom had indicators, so technically this was complying.

3. He is a politician. If you can cut people's time at the DMV....this makes people really happy. And happy people will vote for you.

This all makes perfect sense to me. Good on Christie.
