I think the valve covers alone cost $1k per side. Part it off. It may take you a while to sell all the bits and pieces, but since you only put $1k into it, you should make it back pretty fast.
Or... Call up Irv Seaver BMW... I think they may have a right cylinder from an HP2Sport... they may either toss it away or send it back to BMW AG for analysis... one of the two.

If you decide to part it out, let me know. I'd be interested in a few bits
but I thought there is a bigbore kit out there in Germany for DOHC boxers - that you would be interested in |

$1000 Canadian, wow. I would sell most of the parts, but keep some of the cooler bits for hanging on the shop wall. It is art work that will only go up in value.
What will you take for the wheels?

Thanks for all the input. Waiting to hear back from the gentleman in the Netherlands about spares from one being parted out....agreed that the engine NEEDS to be taken completely down and closely inspected (start at the crank and work out). I'm not viewing this as a "quick fix" (...hey, just missing a few bits, how hard can it be??). As for the salvage title issue, resale isn't an issue for me, as this would be a bike to keep for posterity sake.

Have you thought about transplanting a R1200S motor/ecu into it form a crashed bike? With one of those, you could at least ride it while you searched for the parts that you need. Then once you had all of the parts collected, you could possibly sell the R1200S motor for what you paid for it. Heck, you might even find that it’s just fine as a frankenbike.
Here’s a rough salvage R1200S that I’m guessing will sell for less than $1k. Salvage 2007 BMW R1200 S for Sale Put a R1200S Motor / ECU into it. FTW. |

Sounds like you've already made up your mind to rebuild, but if you decide not to I'd be interested in buying it complete for spares for mine.

If you decide to rebuild it, I do have a complete mint shape OEM Exhaust for it,
or if you decide to sell it, I'd be willing to buy the whole thing. (did I mention I was also located in the Canada also) Last edited by duder; 09-21-2010 at 07:43 PM.. |

Actually I'm not interested in a second runner, BUT since MINE is a keeper I'd love to have some spare parts
EDIT: this sounds like a big project and I hope he gets it done, but without scoring some "seconds" its quite the expensive proposition. And as far as myself rebuilding it... with importing and salvage title work, way more work than i'm interested in. BUT if I had some spare parts to test on I would start changing things up on mine.

I can see the the HP2Sport holding a higher value then most bikes that are available today, but I would have to believe it's future value would be much less then the price I paid for it. besides, I've already sunk too much money into my bike to ever sell it. If I can sell the exhaust then I can buy more farkles to put on it. I never did like my bikse stock anyways |

I'm assuming you went with the Akra system? I'm glad I haven't heard that system in person otherwise i'd be several thousand dollars poorer.

wow...errr lots of input
Like any other project, the price and money involved depends on perspective and the willingness to part with it. I would love to go out and buy one of these new (along with a Ducati Monster S2R) but cannot justify dropping the dime at even reduced BMW rates. Especially here in Alberta, where we're lucky to get 4.5 to 5 months of riding season (or if you like the combination of sheet metal screws and knobby tires, you can extend that to 12 months).
Part of the experience for me is learning and rebuilding (had a pretty much new Buell a few years ago and got bored for lack of wrenching, same with the Daytona 650). One of my brothers has a saying "...we've all got our own type of crazy..." which he has actually used in conversation/argument with his wife...another story. My type of crazy (or stupid, if you will) includes doing projects like this. For this bike, I am willing to sacrifice the 2.5 Norton Commandos (and when ya think about repair prices, rebuilding an engine properly really isn't a cheap prospect, regardless of make). To quote Leonard Cohen..."...there ain't no cure for love..." To quote the movie "Old School"..."love, she's a m#%$@&f*@%^$#er!" I appreciate all the input and the attempts at trying to steer me in the responsible direction (you can lead a boy to college, but you can't make him think.) |
