Ouch, that looks like a bent valve stem from here. You might be able to verify with a LED flashlight and small dental mirror down the spark plug hole.

Good luck dude, my Wossner top end thread tells how to pull the head.

Shreddr, no compression in the cylinder and valve won't fully retract. Almost certain it's a bent valve. Found your site but I'm not certain I'm up for pulling the head. Think I may decide to just have it done ($$$!).

Thanks to all for your information, support, encouragement and sympathies!

Phil, while I do understand your hesitation, it is not as hard as you would think.
At this point, you can take the head off and have it done, then put the bike (engine) back together.

Maybe you have a mechanically inclined friend who can help you?

Phil,

I am so sorry it has come to this. I will update my install notes to relfect your lessoned learned and I will stress in future more points in the install notes themselves as opposed to stating it in the emails I send to confirm postage.

Ralf, your constant needling is nothing but a PITA distraction. Why can't you back off or do you get off playing the antagonist.

It is easy to miss a turn doing this sprocket turn. Andy did it on his and now another Pelican may be there again. Get off you smart ass and show us your mechanical aptitude by making a you tube video or stfu. Repositioning the camshaft to properly fit the pin is essential for proper cam timing. If you have any inkling that something has gone wrong backing off on the adjusters on the valves will save you some big $$'s and this was the recommended action when Crunch had his problem last year. If you'd pay more attention to the thread and less to pimping me you would be more helpful.

Shreddr offers some great advice. Make sure the valve is bent before you tear into it. But, the photo does paint a gloomy forecast.

Yawn... if YOU would pay attention, you would know that I have a very supportive page on my website, depicting AND describing what to do, when it comes to changing the sprockets.

But, you are obviously too busy, squeezing yourself into a discussion you don't belong in, to have noticed that. Keep spreading your second-hand wisdom.

I don't know if you are trying to say that it's easy to turn the engine and have the chain/sprocket get misaligned (by a tooth or more) or if you are trying to tell us that 'oops, I skipped a step and now I've mucked things up'.

In any case, you two need to get a room. I can sense the pent up frustration between you two... maybe next year a TOR you two can put your tents next to each other's.

BMW Roundel Very Sorry Guys!

Greetings Phil and Rick,

Sorry about the bent valve issues guys. Remember you did your best.

Phil,

Although you have a bent valve, I would focus on the metal filings first.

If your engine flush reveals filings, you must deal with that issue or you will have the possibility of an engine failure. If the flush does not reveal any filings then proceed with the head removal to evaluate the damage.

Rick,

If you are also modifying your headers do not hollow out the cat leaving an empty balloon chamber - Instead have the cat removed and replaced with SS tubing the same size as the entry and exit pipe at the converter balloon. (Use 304L or 321 stainless tubing). In this fashion you will have excellent performance headers - If you just hollow out the converter you will have turbulent swirling and exhaust gas cooling in the empty converter balloon. That is not good for performance as it slows the exhaust flow!

I hope that everything works out well for both of you.

Phil, before you go shipping heads across the ocean and paying for parts and labor, you may want to price the job and consider this, it says up to 12/02 and you have an 04 BCR, so i'm not sure if it works, but a used head may be a cheaper alternative.:

R1150R/GS & R1100S Right Side Cylinder Head, Single Spark, Up To 12/02

Shreddr, I'd jump at that but it's a two-valve model. Mine's an 04, four-valve, two-spark one.

i'm pretty sure its a four valve head, but you are right its not a dual spark. I do recall somebody converting these things to dual spark, but that is probably more difficult than fixing the bent valve.

It's BENT!

OK, after a bit of trepidation and moral support from a local Bimmerphile, I got the head off. This simple job was complicated by fear of the unknown. One intake valve was definitely bent. From the looks of it, the guide may be damaged as well:

Interesting note was that the other valve barely made contact with the piston. If you look closely, there's a slight semi-circular indentation in the carbon on from about 8 to 12 o'clock on the lower right valve. Anyone tell me why only one made solid contact? Other valve seat appears to be ok.

Fortunately, the piston appears to be virtually untouched. I brushed off the somewhat loose carbon and there were no burrs. May be a slight indentation on the otherwise straight edge on the upper left part of the piston where contact was most likely made.

Off to Ted's Machine Shop tomorrow!

Cool, that is one bent valve, you didn't do that turning the engine over by hand, did you?

Did you already order the gaskets and whatever else you will need to put it back together?

AZ, haven't ordered parts yet but will do so soon. I turned the engine over by hand two or three times. No problem. Then I reassembled and cranked. Bad sound=bent valve. Sprocket wasn't correctly installed and I think it rotated after I cranked it.

Lesson learned for installing sprockets: torque sprocket bolt about 20 ft/lbs then back it out to visually insure the sprocket is correctly seated on the end of the camshaft.

Good on you for having a go yourself. Looks like you will get away with it quite cheaply with the bonus of gaining confidence and skills working on your own bike.
