New here, thanks guys

I finally got my 04 R1100S mandarin/grey (19K mi.) on the road this weekend. I've been removing and replacing things, cleaning and finally tuning it since early November. It came to me stock, (in)complete with missing nuts and bolts, non functional rear brake , and a nice coat of road gunk everywhere. Now it runs, rides and looks great. I've spent hours reading your old posts on just about everything related to oilheads. Seems there's nothing I've needed to know that hasn't been covered here.

When I changed the gear box lube and found this...

I found this: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/bmw-r1100s-r1200s-tech-forum/405300-shavings-tranny-drain-plug.html

Just one of many assists from you, so Thanks Guys!

Updating my garage in the next few days. I'm a newby in engine related matters, but if I can help anyone with any other mods I've done, It'd be my pleasure.

John

Welcome John! What else you got hiding out in your garage, is that a Duc among others in there? I like that color combo of your S, mand/titan, ALMOST as much as I do mine , nice looking scooter! Looks to be non-ABS, bar risers, billet torque arm, tinted bubble, throttlemeisters, canisterectomy done and cat removed, CF rear hugger, Ohlins rear, front too? Headers look like they might be ceramic coated? It's looking better all the time John, nice score on this one! How many of these mods did you do and what was done by PO? Dave

Welcome and you have a very nicely equipped R1100S there. I have got to say that I prefer the frame color matching header pipes to the typical chrome and tarnished look. At first glance the headers appear to be part of the actual frame of the bike as they complete the lower half.

Enjoy the ride - my affair with the R1100S lasted almost 11 years.

Welcome aboard, John. I had one that color...loved it. Sold it still running well at 46,000 miles for an R12S. Wish I could have kept them all. I had basically that much flakeage the first time I changed tranny oil at 18k so kept an eye on it changing fluids every 12k. It never was a problem. I notice case mounts, so guess you have system cases for it? I had regular and city lids....a very versatile arrangement.

PS. What's that thing with a knob on it sticking out under pointing at the rear tire?

Looks like a small filter on an extended breather hose.

As stated, it's a cankcase breather. I have had one too for more than 10 years in the same location. It does two things: No more oil in the airbox and no more oil consumption. Some argue that it makes for a bit smoother running engine as well.

I created one too, but I hid it out of sight under the bodywork. Looks a bit cleaner.

Is it effective, TM? I never thought of doing such a thing. Must have missed that discussion and I had two R11S's.

Nice Job! What did you use to clean the engine?

It is effective in that it keeps oil from clogging up the airbox, and it significantly reduced my oil consumption. I haven't noticed it running any different. I used a Honda VFR750 crank breather filter on the original hose and tied it next to the air box intake.

Only downside is that I use Motul 300V synth oil which kinda smells like a cookie factory and after you replace the oil, everytime you are stopped with the engine running, you smell that cookie factory smell coming up from under the bodywork.

Well that could be a good thing if it was chocolate chip.

Thanks for the welcomes. I went for a ride this morning in 28 degree weather. That's below freezing for you Celsius guys and pretty cold for Eastern NC. Heated gear on a cold morning seems like cheating; it's too easy. I'm really diggin this bike, especially the torque! Way different than my Hondas, but you guys already know that. It's much smoother since I got brave and did a valve adjustment, zero=zero and synched the throttle bodies. Replies are in order, so here goes:

BCRDave, that silver wheel belongs to an 07 VFR800. It's in my "garage". (The wheel is from a 93 VFR750.) The only mod the PO did was removal of the evap canister. I do have an Ohlins on the front, too. What a pity to hide it. At least the preload adjuster shows. I discovered the benefits of good shocks and springs late in the process of modding my first bike. It was the first thing I did to the next two. The headers were coated by Curt at CCPerformance.com. for about 75 a side plus shipping. I think I found him from a Pelican post. He's a good guy to do business with. That project was the only thing I sent out. I like wrenching as much as riding.

dee jones, will do. Can't wait to ride this bike in Western NC.

kpolito99 and wiggledled bits, Thank You, Sirs.

Bob Hancock, guess these guys 'splained what that growth on the back of my bike is. I've since cleaned it up and tucked it in. Some pics are in my garage. I was changing the air filter and found a bit of oil in the air box. A search informed me this was "normal" for our bikes. I changed it anyway. I do have cases(eBay). The covers are nicely painted, just not the right color. I'm going to sand them just to the paint , then paint them to match mine. I am on the lookout for a pair of city lids. Flakeage = normal, good to know.

throttlemeister, yeah, the friction coefficient is different for Mandarin BMW paint. Something to do with how the clear coat bonds to it. It lets the bike slip through the air with less drag than most of the other colors. Not sure about our Titan Gray. My neighbor came over and asked if I was going to paint it, " 'cause BMW is known for ugly paint schemes on it's bikes". I just laughed at him.

Nitro or throttlemeister, is this yours?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads5/crankcase_breather+61117480827.jpg

I lost the OP but saved the picture. Regardless, I stole the idea for mine.

As mentioned, I have updated my garage pics. Have fun on your bikes!

John
