2004 R1100S no spark
I am having no spark issues on 2004 R1100S twin spark.
Fuel pump cycles on ECU power at fuse and at #30 on relay have power and fuel pump/ ECU relays have been switch showing they both work since the fuel pump cycles Neutral light is on bike is in neutral and kill switch is on when trying for spark Clutch position and kick stand position cycle the fuel pump as expected Wires from to key to electrical box all pass ohm check Fuel pump cycles on and off when spinning the engine over with the rear wheel and the key on - (shows HEL / HAL sensor is working) Used coil tired Used ECU tried HAL / HES replace with used (see above testing) bike ran and did not restart after getting fuel on a dry night Last edited by ericmace; 01-14-2017 at 10:52 AM.. |

Check to see if you're getting spark from the primary stick coil on the top.
Check to see if you're getting spark from the secondary coil on the bottom. Check to see if you're getting fuel spray from the fuel injector when you hit the starter button.

no spark to the top or bottom spark plug
fuel spray when hitting the starter button do you know where the top plug wire comes from the bottom ones I have traced back to the replaced coil coil has 12 volts |

Two things you can try :
1. Disconnect the power to the ECU via the fuse or pull the leads off the battery for 10 mins. I'm reaching really out there, but what do you have to lose. Reason - just in case the ECU had a hiccup. 2. Take the starter off , clean it, and inspect it. Look for loose plate with burn holes, loose magnets, or armature commutator brush build-up. I do not know about no spark, but some times a faulty starter can draw enough current that you will get a weak spark.

Check wires from ignition switch, I believe these are tight on this model & sometimes get stretched around the steering head. No spark could also be the HES.

I have checked all the wires from the ignition key on the back side where they are soldered on to the end of the plug and they all have ohms. I left the battery disconnected over night to reset the ECU. I rechecked the replaced used HES (HAL) sensor again with it on the bike and turning the engine over and both the top and bottom sensors cycle on and off.
The wire to the coil for the bottom 2 spark pugs tests positive with the key on and negative with the key off. The other wire that is black and white is neither positive or negative but with the key on and the wired plugged into the coil becomes positive Thanks for help so far Last edited by ericmace; 01-14-2017 at 12:58 PM.. |

here's what I see for '01 up diagram, cols always "HOT" (green wire)
Black goes back to ECU, should be negative pulse, if you have "+" to green and coils are good then problem with ECU. AFAIK only one crank sensor on the bike, the "HES" and it runs both coils and injectors, so if injectors fire and coils do not... time to try a different Motronic unit ![]() |

You could have bad wiring from the hes to ECU. One hall sensor triggers the injectors/fuel pump, the other hall sensor triggers spark. Also, the ECU has a spark lockout mode but resetting the ECU clears it.

Let's test to see if you're getting a pulse to the primaries of the any of the coils.
Pull the plug to the stick coil. Be very careful because the plastic is very brittle. Now, checking the lead wire, not the stick coil, let's check for a pulse when you hit the starter button. I believe the center lead pin hole is ground. You can check that if you want. The two outer pin holes are the primary that go to the stick coil. One of the outer pin holes should be hot ( positive +12 volts) as soon as you turn the key to the "on' position. The other pin hole will be triggered by the ECU. You do not have get any measurement from this pin hole . Connect a test light or voltmeter to the two outer pin holes. When you hit the starter button to crank the engine over, there should be some indication on the test light or voltmeter.
