Boxster Questions

I'm considering selling the 951 and picking up a Boxster. I'm thinking a 2.7 or 3.2.

If I get a Boxster, the wife wants to drive it too. The wife doesn't drive stick and I won't teach her on the 951 because a clutch job is difficult to do or expensive, depending on which way you look at it. (Not to mention she would completely panic when the turbo kicked in.)

How difficult is a clutch job on a Boxster? What all does it entail? On a 951, you have to pull most of the exhaust and the tranny...

If I don't do it myself, how expensive is it?

What other periodic maintenance does a Boxster require? How expensive is it: 1)If I do the work myself? 2) If I pay a shop to do it?

Boxster clutch job is about a 8-9 hour job if you have a lift and the correct tools. Maintenance on a boxster will be things like tires, RM seals, oil seperator,O2 sensors, and brakes. Yes you can work on it yourself. Shop rates are from $50-110 per hour. Take note if you think a good Porsche mechanic is expensive try a bad one!!

In my experience, teaching a loved one how to drive a car with a manual transmission is hard on the car and the personal relationship. I understand that some driving schools have a method for teaching this skill. I recommend you see what it would cost to turn this problem over to a professional. It might be cheaper than a new clutch.

I wrench on my 951, which I consider a difficult car to work on. (There isn't an unused square inch in the engine compartment.) I'm well familiar the consequences of shoddy work...which is why I do most work myself. I have a trusted mechanic for internal engine work, and another for suspension work. Everything else is mine...

I have given my wife a few lessons on my old S10 before it crapped out, and she did fine....it's just the lessons ended when the truck died.

How do you get at the engine in a Boxster?

You must put the top in the service mode, then remove the carpet on top of the engine cover, remove the cover, there is also a cover behide the seats, as well as in the front part of the reat trunk. The Bentley manual is a good place to start. Not the easiest car ot work on!!!
