I've been using the Personal for a few years - pretty happy. But it always seems like there's a better deal to be had somewhere if you shop insurance.
I don't think insuring a Porsche is any different than other vehicles when it comes to picking the insurance company. |

I just got off the phone with Lant Insurance. They offer great rates, but some restrictions. Here's the basics:
They need an official appraisal (all ins. co's do, AFAIK). I estimated mine at $13K (having one done this summer), and she quoted me $375/yr. At $15K it would be $420/yr. This is really good all-year round coverage: $1million liability, $100 collision $100 comprehensive. Here's the downside: no commuting to work, no business use, and no daily driving, i.e. no taking it to the mall, walmart, video store, etc. Basically it's for driving on the street or highways. It's ok to, say, stop at the drug store on the way home, but that's about it. And of course absolutely no track. This is the first classic or vintage ins. co. I've contacted (I'm with Economical right now, through our regular broker, at $150/month). Are most classic policies this restrictive? I don't mind paying a bit more for more flexibility, as I do use mine as a daily driver, including taking it to the mall or video store, but I'd like to do better than $150/month.

Weird, Both my cars are appraised at about $16.6- $17K. I have them insured in the silver wheels plan at about $150/yr premium

Maybe the difference is due to the age? Though it's not far off from mine. Do you find the restrictions to be a pain?

I never intended to use as a daily drivers, Just weekend driving. I live north of Toronto, The Hockley Valley is my favorite haunt. I will drive it up to Georgian bay. Do some Wednesday night local car shows. I have driven it to work for a show and shine we had there. I just gave Lant a call and they said fine. THere is no retriction on mileage. I don't know why you would want to drive these older cars through rush your traffic to work or to the mall. I also got historic plates for both cars ($18/yr). It works for me.

I understand what you're saying. Rush hour in any stick shift car sucks (especially on the QEW!) but especially in a 30+ yr old car. I work at home, so commuting to work isn't an issue, but we only have 2 cars, and my wife has the other one at work all day, so the Porsche does end up doing daily-driver duty frequently. When it's off the road in the winter it can be tough having only 1 car on the road.

I thinks it's the point of the classic car insurance plans (e.g. Silver Wheels) to have restrictions. That is why they are so cheap -- the risk is limited by the rule that you can't drive the car to work, etc. If the car is used to drive to/fro work, you're stuck with regular insurance rates. I don't think there's any way around it.
I'm planning on switching to the Silver Wheels plan through Lant Insurance. |

Great idea. I'm new to this whole Porsche thing, and also to the area, so I'd love to meet some other Porsche types around. Name a time and place - I'm usually pretty busy but flexible.
By the way, just want to make sure you guys have all seen this thread: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=208819 Chris

Thanks for the heads-up on the potential local run.
I've only just recently got into my garage to tune on the p-car. Hopefully it'll be roadworthy within a month or two. So if you don't mind a lowly 914 running along with the likes of all you SW Ontario 911 guys... |
