you're welcome and thx too to GWN7 for the tip

edit...finding the tariff code info was a bit difficult, so i figured i'd post it here:

- the duty tariff code for cars is 8703 and the code for parts is 8708, both here:

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trade-commerce/tariff-tarif/2008/t2008-03/ch87-eng.pdf

- the exemption for cars over 25 years old (and parts for cars over 25 years old) is 9966.00.00 found here:

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trade-commerce/tariff-tarif/2008/t2008-01/ch99-eng.pdf

like GWN7 said, the code for a 3.0 litre porsche 911 is normally 8703.23.00.51 (less than 25 years old). when i imported mine, the customs officer not only missed the 25 year exemption, but also mis-classified it as 8703.21.90.00 (ie under 1.0 litre). i think i'll be double checking this stuff from here on....

(motorcycles and motorcycle parts are totally exempt from duty, regardless of age...8711 and 8714)

Thanks to All

I picked up my "new" 2002 911Turbo up in Atlanta in December and drove back to Edmonton. The information from this thread made everything go easy.
The big surprise was the courtesy that I was treated with at the border (and no that is not sarcastic). Generally you are treated as if you are guilty and must prove innocence, but I did not experience this at all. I am glad that I had everything in order to make this transaction easy.

Thanks to all for your input ..... now if you have any control over the weather that would be great.

Same for all the car parts and accessories I've brought in over the years.

Smile Bilingual Airbag Stickers

When I brought my 01 Boxster S into Canada (moved back here from the States) I went into a local dealer with my digital camera and took a photo of the sticker on a car in the showroom. I futzed around a bit and created a powerpoint file with the image in it.

I printed those images on my inkjet printer using Avery sticky backed paper, cut them out and stuck them onto my visors for the inspection. Went just fine ... as I recall I had to put a rubber band around one visor because the Avery paper didn't stick. As I pulled out of the inspection place I reached up and peeled them off, and they have been off ever since.

If anyone wants that image, email me ... I am happy to send the PPT file.

Lorne

Hi Lorne@YVR (3363893),

Could you please send me the PPT file at <jplatt@sympatico.ca>

Thanks for your help here.

Have any of you had to deal with installing the child seat tether anchor? (For non-convertibles)

I haven't, personally. A lot of it depends on the individual RIV inspector, and how practical-minded they are.

Christien,

You were right! All I needed was the tether kit. The service advisor at Canadian Tire asked me to place the tether kit on the passenger seat. He was a certified inspector so we went out, did his thing and faxed off the document. Less than 10 minutes, I was outta there!

Luckily, he remembered me from last year when I imported my Vespa Px150.

Hi guys, new here
i am thinking about importing a 1999 Carrera c2, just wondering what are all the fees that will occur
here is what i have gathered

duty 6.1%
im in bc
GST 5%
PST 7%
Green levy 1000--don't know if it is under this fee
RIV 200 i think
air 100
i think that is all the fees i can think of

Apply all the fees to the car cost of the car $20000 am i on the right track?
anything else i missed?

The taxes are additive ie Price x duty x GST/PST. I think you have missed the fee for the manufacturer clearance letter. Not sure though as mine was > 15 years and did not require one.

Green levy (fuel efficiency) is only for 2007 and newer.

AS Christien mentioned the FIT tax started in 2007 so anything newer than that is subject to it. This is what it is and how it's calculated.

The excise tax, also known at the Vehicle Efficiency Incentive (VEI) will apply to certain new automobiles (including station wagons, vans and sport utility vehicles) designed primarily to carry passengers. It is calculated on the basis of the weighted average fuel consumption and vehicles that surpass 13 or more litres per 100 km will be subject to the VEI Excise tax at the following rates:

•At least 13 but less than 14 litres per 100 km: $1,000;
•At last 14, but less than 15 litres per 100 km: $2,000;
•At least 15 but less than 16 litres per 100 km: $3,000;
•16 or more litres per 100 km: $4,000.

Hey guys, Coming down from Edmonton, Importing a 1986 930 from Atlanta. What border crossing is used for car imports into Alberta from Montana? Having the car shipped from Atlanta to the Montana border and need to know which crossing does the import process.

Thanks in advance

I believe it is Sweetgrass that does the paperwork. riv.ca has more details.

Hi all,

I've used this thread successfully to bring in a car a few years ago but I'll assume things have changed. I would appreciate any information because it always seems like a grey area.

The car is an '80 911SC. USA to Canada. I will never be registering this vehicle to be driven in Canada. What can I expect to pay at the border? I'll assume the following:

-RIV exempt due to age
-recall letter exempt due to age
-6.1% duty exempt due to age (is this true? it would be nice)

What taxes do I have to pay? From what I recall, the last time I brought a vehicle here (2007) I paid taxes when I registered and plated the car.

Again, any input is appreciated.
Many thanx

I'm in the same boat, brought in a 993 in 07 and now.

1986 930 into alberta from atlanta
Build date july 85

Will this be

-riv exempt?
-recall letter, unnecessary?
-6.1% duty exempt?

From what I gather

I need to pay at the border crossing

-GST
-AC tax

Is this correct?

Thanks in advance

Rod
