1. I don't think so, but could be wrong. Either way, not a deal-breaker - cheap install once it's here in Canada.
2. Yes. Unless you like to gamble with 10s of thousand of dollars. Personally, I like the nickel slots
3. You're fine with the US temp permit until you get it registered here.

Get a recall clearance letter from the dealership you're buying it from. Insist on it as part of the purchase, and ensure it's on letterhead, or has a business card with Porsche logo photocopied onto it.

The temp permit is probably just temp registration. I'd get my insurance company to issue you temp insurance untill you get full coverage on the car.

If your getting the PPI done at the same dealership your buying from is sort of a mute point....best to take the car to a independant shop to get a PPI done. Then work on your deal.

Thanks for your prompt reply!! The car still has 6 months/26000 miles factory warranty on it.. So hopefully they are willing to do the PPI...

And I was told "campaign" letter will be included for free..

Yeah, having the seller do the PPI is pretty much useless. Just because they're a Porsche dealership doesn't mean they're all above-board. I would definitely have it done at another shop. If the selling dealership balks at that, I would take that as a reason to be concerned.

You'll have to fork over $500 to get your warranty registered here in Canada. At least, that's the fee at the Ontario dealerships. If you're in a different province, it might be more or less.

Yes I know!! But they're a Porsche dealer.. Do they normally allow you to take the car to another location for inspection?

Yes, most will. Any dealership, franchise or independent, that will not allow a 3rd party mechanical inspection of any of their inventory is suspect. Plain and simple.

Ye, I read about that $500 charge for transferring warranty. But I'm not gonna transfer that anyways.. I'm in Ontario and I'm not driving it till next summer. So when that time comes, the warranty will be expired..

My suggestion for finding a good shop would be to post on the Rennlist boxster, 996 or 997 forum, or on the main 911 forum here on Pelican. Just ask for a recommendation for a shop for a PPI in whatever city the seller's in - lots of local guys who know the good places will reply, most likely. Have the Porsche dealer call them to setup up an appointment and bring the car over, and have the results sent directly to you by the inspection shop by fax or email.

Make sure you've got insurance in place, then you should be good to go! The drive home is the best part

Oh, and make sure you check out the Rennlist Canada forum - lots of local guys there (mostly GTA).

No problem at all for newbie questions - this isn't the kind of process you can cut corners on!

The Porsche Canada warranty? Wouldn't it be the same anywhere in Canada?

I thought Porsche Canada charged $1250 for all the paperwork/warranty which included an oil/filter change (wow, what a deal ).

Lets hope the dealer and independent don't cooperate or know each other too well.

Although I realize it isn't possible for everybody, personally, I would always go and do a thorough inspection myself. Maybe not the leak down test, but everything else.

The problem with a DIY inspection is that most people don't know what to look for. Are they really going to drain and check the oil in a parking lot? Do they know where to look for signs of accidents, flood or other abuse? Usually not.

AFAIK, it's $500 here at either of the Toronto dealers, but I've never gone through that myself.

The 72 hr rule is actually the only rule. The other parts about not accepting faxes and not on weekends is a lazy US Customs official's way of not wanting to do any work.

You can bring it home any day of the week (or night too). As long as the Port is open.

That's not necessarily true. If the brokerage office is closed, you can't import the car. A friend of mine ended up in a motel in Sarnia one night because of this. Might be different at different crossings.

I just thought I would add my 2c worth here since it came up on the general forum.
Great guide Christien!
I have brought in several vehicles over the past few years from the US into BC and can pass on the following suggestions:
Get a "Recall Letter" from a dealer in the States-the original selling dealer should be OK about providing it. I ask for the service history that they have on file and once they have that on the computer I ask if they can give me a written statement saying there are no outstanding recalls. You DO NOT have to pay a Canadian dealer for this letter! Any authorized Porsche dealer rep can do it. I state this because the Canadian dealers are trying very hard to mislead people. This applies to all brands of vehicle.

If bringing a car into the Vancouver area I can recommend the Canadian Tire store on Steveston highway to do the inspection-try to deal with the asst service manager, his name is Stuart. I used to be a service manager for VW/Audi/Porsche and I would have hired this guy in an eye blink-he was brilliant! Very knowledable/helpful and saved me money.

Importing "Salvage" title cars into Canada is no more difficult than regular title-it involves one more inspection-for "Structural Integrity". The main focus of this seems to be ensuring that it meets wheel alignment spects. So try to get current wheel alignment numbers-the actual print out from the machine is best. I have the phone number of a registered inspector here in Vancouver area who did the inspection for $50 on my most recent salvage purchase-but he has to have those alignment numbers.

A final note: Not many people realise that you cannot import a "Flood Damaged" vehicle into Canada except for parts. These cars tend to look like fantastic deals but be warned!
