What kind of oil are you using and where do you get it ?
Seems that mobil 1 15w50 is no longer available. Any source for kendal or vr1 here in ontario ? |

Bump - I am also looking for a source for Mobil1 15w50 in Vancouver. I can find all their other offerings (5w50, 10w30, etc) at the usual places (Lordco, MOPAC, Crappy Tire, etc), but the 15w50 is MIA.

Are you looking for synthetic?

Amsoil? Delvac 1300? Shell Rotella-T?
PS Is the Steve Wong chip worth the money?

PBH,
I spoke to my local Porsche shop today and they advised that Mobil1 15W50 is not available at all in Canada any more, so I will need to explore some of the alternatives you mentioned. SW chip is great. I have never driven the stock chip, as the P.O. had installed another (Autothority I think) aftermarket chip. It was a good performer too (tough to say which put out more power without a dyno), but it had a very rough idle that drove me nuts, which the SW chip has addressed beautifully. Buy it - you will like it.

Delvac and Rotella are good oils. I would be less keen on Amsoil. I believe Amsoil still has not joined the API, not sure why.
Find a good Porsche mechanic and ask them what they've switched to. Personally I use Castrol GTX 20W50, or Rotella 15W40. Is 15W50 still available in the US? Might be worth stocking up across the border, or having it shipped to you. Thanks for the chip info. Next year maybe.

I just got back from CTC and Wal-mart and they both had it.

Sorry, my mistake. It was 5W not 15W.
So are you guys going to run the 5W now? I like the Mobil because it's easy to get.

Yes - the 5W seems to be everywhere, but no 15W to be found.
Service manager at the Porsche shop (not a dealer, just repairs) recommended topping up with the 5W until the next change then switching to dino oil 15W50 using the brand of your choice. He claims there is no advantage to using synthetics unless you want to run longer between changes. He also indicated that minor oil leaks using synthetic may disappear when switching back to normal oil due to larger molecule size.

Not sure I would agree with that analysis, Strugs. In a water cooled engine he is probably correct, but in an air cooled engine there are advantages to the higher temperature capabilities of synthetic.
Don't expect the lealing to be significantly differnt either. Having said that, I use Castrol dino oil.

Canadian Tire now sells 0W50 Mobil1. Why not use that?

Most people recommend Mobil1 75W90 Synthetic oil for G50 trannies. Unfortunately just like the 15W50, no one north of the 49th parallel seems to carry it. I guess I am going to have to make a run for the border to track some of this stuff down.

Although Mobil 1 was originally recommended to me, I have since learned that it is too thin for my 915. (I assume for your G50 as well)
I found that after a day at the track there seemed to be a little looseness in my gear box. Swepco and Redline are apparently the way to go.

Mopac sells Redline. By the 12 quart box too. A tad pricey, I think it set me back about $130CDN, but its only money.
