Porsche Crest Another sale price evaluation

1980 SC Sunroof Coupe with 3.2 SS and extras.

Since I bought the 993, I don’t drive the 911 much and have to face selling it one of these days reluctantly because of how much work I put into it.
Some of you know the car and how it performs.

About 15000 km on new engine and transmission rebuild.
Body and paint is very good.
Everything works, no leaks, loves to rev.
History:
Hawaii, California, British Columbia.

Engine:
3.2 liter SS with SSI HE and SS Dansk muffler,
Bottom is a 1982 3.0 with 1978 CIS (None-Lambda)
98 mm Mahle cylinders and JE pistons 9.5 : 1 CR mated by EBS Racing.
964 cams,
Valve job and bored out intake ports,
New main bearings and rod bearings (All standard)
ARP rod bolts,
Mild boat-tailing on supports,
Complete seal and gasket kit,
Ignition distributor without vacuum re-curved by Steve Weiner.
Bosch CDI.
New fuel pump.

Transmission:
915 with LSD rebuild by John Walker.
Shift tower refurbished,
New clutch and cable,
Refurbished CV half-axles,

Maintenance:
Steering column bushing installed,
Pedal cluster rebuild with bronze bushings,
Complete brake job including calipers rebuild, new rotors and pads,
New front and rear bearings,
External oil cooler Carrera type, not trombone,

Suspension:
New Bilstein struts and shocks,
A-arm and banana arm bushings,
Bump-steer kit installed,
Lowered 25”F and 24.5” rear,
Aligned and corner-balanced,
Strut bar installed.

Wheels:
Polished 16” Fuchs front 7” and rear 8” with new Bridgestone Pole Position.

Extras:
Euro lights with twin-relays for HI and LOW,
Daylight running lights,
Carrera front spoiler with fog lights,
Rear custom spoiler, (Can be easily removed)
3rd brakelight 993-style,
10 disc CD player.
Leather Sports Seats,
Custom Steering wheel and Porsche leather shift knob,
3rd pedal foot rest,
Volt meter.

What's a fair price?

Just sell the 993 to me.... Cheeeep!
That would take care of your problem.
You have a lot into that car, it is going to be tough to get it out again.
Kind of too bad that your other 3.0L motor went down the road. You might have been better to throw the stocker in it and re sale the 3.2.
I don't have a number for you but both your cars look very nice!

I for one would love to see more pics of this beauty.

Sorry, I'm hardly an authority on 911's, let alone an SC, but from a far away view, it looks damn good.

Good luck with the sale should it happen.

Cheers,
Thom.

I don't expect to recover what I put into it.

A 3.2 SS engine and a rebuild 915 with LSD make the 911 more sellable.
The polished wheels plus sport seats and the extras will help when the time comes.

Conservatively, to build a SS 3.2 today is easily $10k and to professionally refurbish a 915 with LSD another $2k.

It'll take someone in the know to fully understandall the money and effort that went into this 911 and appreciate a very clean version of the classic.

I'll be realistic once I make a decision to sell, probably next year.

I guess the question is who are you selling it to? I am in the market for a Porsche and I am no expert (or close) to the work people can do to the cars. I have a base understanding of some of the models and what their pros/cons are (but learning more each day)

The upgraded 3.2SS ... unless you are a student of many things Porsche one might not know really what it is, what it gives, or what its worth.

The stickers, although only aesthetics, might not appeal to many people.

I suspect with all the customizations it is a case of the car is worth a lot to very few buyers. If it is priced accordingly it may take a while to sell...until the buyer comes along that knows its worth.

And I will +1 Tomas's post ... would love to see more pictures.

So what were you ballparking for $$ ?

Learn as much as you can because after buying a "bargain" Porsche, you might face a $10k bill for a new engine.

The upgraded 3.2SS ... unless you are a student of many things Porsche one might not know really what it is, what it gives, or what its worth.

SS stands for Short-Stroke. It means that instead of 95 mm P/C's 98 mm P/C's are used to increase volume from 3.0 to 3.2. A very desirable addition because when combined with a 964 cams, SSI HE and a flow-through muffler, an additional 40 horses are added

The stickers, although only aesthetics, might not appeal to many people.

No problem. I have a complete stock Carrera rear lid in perfect black for an exchange. And the badges on the grill are not part of the sale.

I suspect with all the customizations it is a case of the car is worth a lot to very few buyers. If it is priced accordingly it may take a while to sell...until the buyer comes along that knows its worth.

No rush here. And you're right, it takes some knowledge to appreciate the value of this one. You can get an average SC for about $15k and learn as you work on it. It takes a few years and money before it ends up where you want it to be

And I will +1 Tomas's post ... would love to see more pictures.

So what were you ballparking for $$ ?
Not yet, maybe next year. Waiting for some people who understand what this 911 represents to come up with a figure. Keep on looking but be careful, there is a lot of junk out there.

Cheers.

Thanks for the info. I'm getting smarter and smarter each day

And you are right about being careful what you buy...I see so many people have put lots of $ into their cars...I am not up for that...

Now with my motorcycles it was a bit different in that I know what I am able to do and I had a trusted wrench for stuff that was beyond me. I need to find something that will not have me bending over after the fact

For someone who claims not to be an expert, I think trapper sure nailed it! A great car, but a very limited market at ( or really anywhere near) it's proper value. I think you either sit on it at 25-30k until the right buyer comes along, or sell it as a premium sc at 20. My $0.02.

Thumbs up

Hey Don,

I'll have to do the run from the Needles Ferry to Vernon a few more times this year.

The wing is custom because I don't like the big Porsche whale tail. It makes a difference. I tried with and without and found a more stable rear end at higher speeds with the spoiler attached.

The wing comes off with 2 bolts and brackets leaving no holes.
And if someone doesn't like the 3rd brake light, I have a pristine black Carrera lid with new grill to replace the existing one.

Gunter, your car looks good and having been on some runs with you I Know it performs very well. It needs nothing, just drive it. Are you taking it to Flagstaff for one more time?
We will be ready to leave on the 10th for Flagstaff. Will likely cross at Osoyoos and work our way southeast towards Spokane. Will have to meet up along the way.

Plan is to take the green Colibri but I'll remove the engine under-tray because of the heat in UT/AZ.
Might leave on the 11th and end up in Flagstaff on the 15th or 16th.
One day in Page, AZ, so I can dip into Lake Powell.
I'm not signed up for the event and will stay somewhere else since Little America is sold out.

beautiful car with nice mods. I personally don't believe that any SC can crack $20k at the moment, but if you were willing to be patient, I think 16 - 17k is possible. Good luck, make sure you keep the fools away from test drives...

If you find one exactly like this one for 16-17k, please, let me know.
I'll buy it immediately and give you a $500.- finders fee.

Must have SS 3.2 engine, rebuild 915 with LSD, ~15000 km on both, new clutch, Bilsteins, polished 7&8 Fuchs wheels with new Bridgestones, Carrera front spoiler, Sports seats etc. and all the other maintenance items mentioned taken care of.

Go for it, it's an easy $500.- you can make.

BTW: Someone who knows this 911 well already offered $75k but I'm keeping it for another year.

Seems like you already have a pretty good idea of what you consider a "fair price", so why ask us? ;-)

Because it's always interesting to hear "Expert" opinions.

Do you have a figure in mind?

Of course, anyone who has done some serious work on a 911 will have an easier time to appreciate all the extras and assess this one realistically.

A lot depends on what someone wants: Any old Porsche to impress the neighbors and girls or get one that is set up for performance.

Fair enough ;-)

Having said that I think your best bet will be a sale to someone here who is afraid to import a US car. To be honest I think the engine work adds value (obviously) but the rear spoiler, steering wheel and shift knob detract. To realize anything like $20k from an SC you need to have either a buyer who really wants the mods you're selling, or a pristine low mileage car. Since you haven't listed the mileage I'm guessing it's not super-low. Unfortunately sellers rarely if ever get their money back out of cars (as you wisely acknowledge)... if you've been offered $21k for the car I'd say that would be an offer I would take.

Cheers

That is what I was thinking. Do what you want to the car, but in the end it is still an SC and limits the upper end of what you can sell it for.

At that price most (not all) people would prefer a G50 car.
