Emission Testing Ontario
Anyone had to submit their car for emission testing this year under the new guidelines. Just wondered if it is alot more stringent?
Any chance of passing without a cat?

Apparently they are.
They read from the computer history as oppose to the probe in the pipe. Drive Clean - Ministry of the Environment Failure rate is way up (7 out of 10 tested in 2013). http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/story/2013/01/30/ottawa-ontario-emissions-test-drive-clean-redundant.html Soon it will be worth it to move out of the city. 30 miles down the road, no test. Can you spell; C A S H - G R A B ![]() ![]()

All cars with OBD I and OBD II require diagnostic code scanning and anything without has a 2 speed idle test with the sniffer...no dyno anymore. The biggest kick in the pants is even if the check engine isn't on, or any codes were recently cleared, the vehicle has to run and pass the self test before they will test it. It could take days to weeks for the vehicle to run a self test. They will also automatically fail you if the check engine light is on...even if it's not an emission related fault. Definetly a cash grab.

My car is an 88. Will they change the cutoff year? Currently 1987. My car has no OBD port, and no cat. Wonder if I should get one fabbed up.
My test isn't for a couple of years.

I don't know if they will ever raise the cutoff. 87 and older for the last number of years but you will still need to do a 2 speed idle test. We probably have a better chance of passing e-test with our non obd cars. Brake pedal position switches on newer chevys cause check engine lights to come on which mean automatic fail.

Hi gents... Resurrecting an old thread here.
I'm considering a move to Toronto from Australia, and potentially bringing my (US LHD) 911SC 1980 with me. I've got SSIs with a Dansk sport muffler... No cat... Do cars older than 88 need to do an emissions test as part of rego? From what I see on the government website it appears not, unless you get stopped by the police for excessive smoke etc...? Is it possible to fabricate a cat into the SSI or muffler? Cheers! Al |

Your car would be exempt from emissions testing because of age. I am not sure the police or insurance would realize it is not the stock exhaust. I think many here have modified exhaust, with out any problems.
In order to get the car licensed the first time, you would need to have a safety inspection - for that in theory the car needs to have stock exhaust - but it is easy to find a "sympathetic" garage that will safety the car as is - There is probably a list of items that are included in the safety inspection online somewhere.- brakes, lights work, horn, etc. I can't speak to cost of fabricating cats - but I expect you could find a Pelican or two that could loan you a stock exhaust if it came to that.

FYI: As of January 1st, 2017 emissions testing for most cars/trucks is free in Ontario. Or at least paid for by the Ontario government.

From a safety check standpoint they are looking for one that meets the stock exhaust standards.
Essentially that means it has an exhaust with muffler(s) Exits far enough back as to not asfixiate the occupants, It's not cracked or poorly mounted etc. Regarding emissions, 1980 should be exempt.

I stick by my earlier post to find a sympathetic mechanic. http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/trucks/pdfs/passenger-light-duty-vehicle-inspection-standard.pdf

Worst case I have a air cooled friendly acquaintance who will overlook some minor quirks our cars have (ie heat system) as long as it's in overall excellent condition. I'm 1 hour from Toronto.

When I went for emission test 2 years ago, mechanic had no clue that I didn't have a cat.
My car passed with flying colours.
