Winter tinkering
I recently removed the engine and transmission from the 911 for routine maintenance and tinkering. I'm very happy with the method I use to drop the engine and to raise it to the engine stand. I can get it out of the car and onto the stand in a few hours of leisure-paced work. All part of the fun of owning an old simple car!
I first removed the valve covers to see if the RSR seals I installed last winter sealed as well as I suspected - not a drop on the garage floor all summer. Indeed, the ends of the rocker shafts are dry! You can see this in this time-lapse video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxAcLwzAJ3w

Good stuff Michel. Not to throw shade on your efforts - I always get a queasy feeling whenever 'cinder' blocks are used as a support medium although I am sure you'll be OK as it's not the weight of the car on them. Having said that, best of luck & keep us posted. I am in the middle of what seems to be a decades long resto on my 1970. Thanks for sharing
Cheers JB

Thanks for the compliment, Johan. I'm very happy with my system - I wanted a safe, inexpensive method of handling the engine by myself. I received lots of good advice and found lots of information on this forum.
I was also apprehensive about the cinder blocks, JB, having seem some crumble when left exposed outdoors for long periods of time. I figured that if they can support a house for decades they can support an engine for ten minutes! The ones I use for this task are new and stored indoors. Thanks for confirming that they are up to the job, Johan. I feel better now!

Hi Michel
I've been trying to place the background music track to your video. Could you please let me know when you have a spare moment. Any updates on your project? It has been a bit slow on the project front here as the weather has not cooperating all that much. Cheers JB

The music used in the video is Django Django's Hail Bop. If you don't know them, check them out. Someone described them as what it would sound like if your math teacher formed a rock group! My winter project is slow as well as I don't get to spend much time on it. Crazy winter weather in Ottawa is making travel risky with lots of cold/thaw cycles so my wife and girls don't want to come up to the cottage as much (freezing rain again tomorrow). I've cleaned up the engine a bit, adjusted the valves and am presently cleaning up the surface rust in the battery boxes. If I remember correctly, you also have an early 911T? If you haven't seen it, check out this thread where a mechanical designer has rendered the carbs and engine of our cars - amazing work: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/971257-3d-model-render-work-2-2t-motor-im-building.html Cheers
