65 Ford Mustang, power??
Hi. Iv'e got a problem with my 65 Mustang 6 cyl auto. It seems to run fine until I go up a hill at about 40 mph or above. Then it will begin to miss slightly and lose power. It feels like a restricted fuel filter. I have changed (and removed) the cartridge and in-line filters, gapped plugs, set timing, checked vacuum advance, all with no result. Any ideas? Thanks.

hmmm. bad gas maybe? I'd probably try new gas, and then maybe look at the carb. maybe your mixture is off or the linkage needs some adjusting.

Hello
Now that looks like it depends on the engine load or on the uphillposition ? A guess would be to check the carb, especially the float level with valve and also the choke position. If you have a portable CO-test equipment you can install it and testdrive. ( Most Porsche mechanics doing work on MFI cars have a portable tester or a dynobench ) Grüsse |

Thanks, guys. Put in a new tank of gas. Choke setting is correct. Will check float next and see what happens.

Try all the basic ignition stuff as well. Check everything you can check (condition of all the bits including the coil, dwell and timing, etc.) and replace anything that seems marginal.

Thanks, Dave. Have checked everthing in the ignition except the coil. It's got to be one of these simple things. Could be ignition harness too, but I don't want to replace unless necessary.

At night, lift the hood and run the engine when it's warm and see if you can see any of the ignition wires sparking or the coil while in the dark. Sometimes, with high compression engines and the fuel we have available to use today, it is hard to jump the gap at the sparkplug and a little dirt and oil on a poor cable will discharge to spark to ground. You might see evidence of this during the test.

Thanks, Kieth. I'll try that. Now that you mentioned it, I guess that I should be using premium fuel and I have been using regular. I'll try higher octane in next tank.
