Out of 20 employees I had 1 that fit that description, I almost went bankrupt trying to keep him here during the housing crash years. I held on to him for 2 years then finally had to lay him off. I paid him VERY well and took very good care of him, because he had my back. The other 19? They are the reason I will never have a large company again.

I am so glad I'm retired and don't have to deal with this crap ! A good work ethic is taught , if your parents didn't teach you then shame on them ! The American dream was/is get a job , work your butt off and hopefully be rewarded for your effort . If it didn't work out you took the chance and found another job . It is ALL on you to perform and deliver value to the employer . I am high school educated and over my 45 year working career worked circles around most every college grad I worked with . I started when I was 15 and threw in the towel when I was 60 . I can still remember an episode with my dad when I was sick with a cold and didn't want to go to work . He said " you can be sick at work just as well as at home so get up and go to work " !!! A little extreme but you get the point .
My mom and dad came to the U.S. after WWII from Germany . They worked their butts off to be a positive influence on society , never asked for a hand out. That work effort rubbed off on my brother and myself and we have instilled that work ethic into our children . Kids/young adults ( milennials ) figure EVERYONE owes them just because their father shot a load into their mother .......... sorry not good enough ! No one owes you anything so get over yourself . Look in the mirror that is the person responsible for you no one else . Put down the damn phone and get to work ! And get off my lawn !

Now everybody thinks they can live like a millionaire... Surprise surprise I went to work sick and sometimes hurt. Even if sumtimes it seems that I play the part of the fool. It is a mistake on your part if you think I am...it proves that you are gullible...a chump.

And this is why the paradigm no longer works in this country. The deserving are flushed into the undeserving pool and left to work three jobs to be a middle class somebody.

Based on the cost of cars, homes and minimum wage in 1970, then 16 per hour would necessarily be the minimum wage adjusted for inflation. The real problem with the situation is the dollar is worth less than 4% of it;s value from 1913... |

After WW2 the game changed because the stage was set for the American working man to become MC, largely by being located in the same place as the means of production and thus having a monopoly of being the only labour in town...That started to change by the mid to late 60's and it has been all down hill since then... The demographic of the American MC has been stagnation or decline since 1975. When Americans ran out of cash they resorted to credit to maintain the illusion of being MC. Since 2008....welll you know what I gots to say aboout that. That said..the amount of your wages reflect you competition for that same job whether it be a foreign worker or technology. Yet Americans have a now ingrained mindset that they deserve $16 ah hour for serving coffee. Since circumstances have changed for the American working man it is delusional to think that there will be a broad based American MC again (there never was one as large before in all of human history), one upon which the global economy depends upon being it's consumer. Oh well I guess you can't MAGA.. So lets get this straight...you have the typical American mindset of entitlement...now that mindset due to the reality of the situation is becoming more and more delusion-ally dysfunctional. Do I need to say it...you use credit to take up the slack to maintain the illusion....which has implications for the sustainability of a global economy of scale when the credit runs out.

You are worth exactly as much as your NEXT job pays you. You may think you are worth more, but if no one is willing to pay you more, you are paid correctly.
How do you change this paradigm? Make more jobs than workers, wages have to go up. Or just keep importing workers, this will keep your wages low. We had several machinist job openings and we believed there was a shortage of machinists....no there wasn't a shortage, there was a shortage of machinists willing to work for the money we were paying. We raised our rates by $4 per hour and WOW, we have machinists!!! Basic supply and demand. Simple as this.

This is true to a point, the American MC did something else too....the wives went to work also! No more single income households. Mom and Dad both work to support the MC life style. And now we wonder why we have the societal issues.....no one is raising our kids.

The big difference for today, the standard of living. We did not have an air conditioned house until I was in high school. We had one car. We did NOT have cable TV, internet and cell phones that cost 50 to 100 bucks each per month. We almost never ate out. Mom cooked at home. We did not go on cruises, or fancy vacations to Disney world. The cost of living was way lower, and the standard of living was much lower. We never worried about going hungry, or being homeless. But we did not have designer clothes, and all the frills and electronics of common middle class citizens of today. We did not have color a TV until 1967. And it was just one set. We had just one phone line and one phone.

But you know, we were happy in those days, though we were poor. My Dad used to say to me, 'Money doesn't buy you happiness.' He was right. I was happier then and I had nothing. We used to live in this tiny old house, with great big holes in the roof ... (That's a Monty Python reference for you darned kids) Last edited by sammyg2; 07-17-2018 at 03:27 PM.. |

My Dad was a highly paid Aero Space engineer and my Mother worked for the AF, we didn't have a phone for years, and I remember listening to the TV as the tube had gone out... It was a 1950 Tele King... We would eat out occasionally at places like the Sizzler or Wang Yings Chinese ...budget joints... We mostly drove on vacations, and stayed at the Flea Bag Inn. which later became known as Motel 6. The exception was going to Grandmas house in Detroit then we took the train... The point here about having a lower standard of living was that it was ON PURPOSE..My Dad had the means for living high on the hog...but didn't because he knew what hard times were...he had grown up and lived them... I remember when our next door neighbor bought a brand new Buick Wildcat with all the bells and whistles..the kid next door showed me the bells and whistles and when I went home and ouuued and ahhed about it.. my Dad said, "Yeah and they have a payment to make on the car." He was an LA County Sheriff and she was a HS Principle and this was in the mid 60's.

From an employers point of view, if you came to work sick and risked infecting the rest of the staff you were sent home post haste with a reprimand. Don't bother coming in if you are infectious.
