I just can't get into a bulky-looking Harley...or a bulky-looking anything.
The more weight, the more HP/torque needed.
The Borile............

The Harley is a better interpretation of the 30s Indian IMHO. Wish I had the original artwork and pics of the shirts on this computer.

Yeah, I think that's the biggest skepticism we all share - what level of performance are they looking for? If they are going after the Indian Scout as their only competition, and targeting that level of performance, I think they are doomed to failure. We know what big twin sport bikes can do. H-D can pretty much dial the performance to any level they desire in today's world. What they choose will make or break this project.

I think a lot of us would like to see Eric Buell's involvement in this. Alas, I think Harley burned that bridge. What a shame.

So what is their new target demographic? How old, what can they spend on a motorcycle, what are these folks buying right now instead, how many do they think they can sell to them?

Disagree. Bikes are about freedom and riding the open roads, all of them. That bike looks like a 2 trick pony. Boulevard cruising and straight line blast. Yes there is a market for it, but a small one in the MC community. HD pretty much nailed their coffin trying to maintain appeal with their base. The MC community is very clicked out, the sport bike crowd, the gangster/criminal/want-to-be crowd, the hooligan crowd, the touring crowd, and then the sport touring crowd which is the most accepting. YMMV.

Of course then there are folks like us on PPOT who just love to burn fossil fuel on 2 wheels!

I’ve got an hour on the new scout. It’s a beautifully made bike. But not scaled for a six foot tall male.

I’m waiting for this to show up on the used market.

Are they actually ever going to build the sports bike?

This one is, though. Scout motor in what i think is a far better platform, the FTR 1200 flat track inspired naked sport bike. By all accounts, what the Scout should have been.

It doesn't look promising at this point. It is supposedly "delayed" for a year. The adventure bike will be out early next year. The new German CEO has put the brakes on a lot of stuff, he claims "for now". We'll see.

Just by visual that Scout embodies nothing I want in a bike. The Indian is closer but the competition is very strong and I have zero brand/nation loyalty in this segment. I ride bikes that are visually appealing and blow my sparce hair back with ease as I hang with sport bikes on a more relaxed upright position.

It’s funny...have been thinking about adding a 3rd bike but after sorting through the myriad of new and used options, remain uninspired. Probably more a commentary on aging than on the motorcycle world. So many are over-styled (that BMW above for example), look like a transformer or are a recycled nostalgia craze run amok (HD). Sucks to become a curmudgeon!

Saw this in person Saturday. It's actually really beautiful in person. Not as big as it looks. However, with the 1,800 cc engine it would be like dating the woman with the biggest jugs in the room.

BMW has really diversified their line over the last few years. They've got the S1000rr at the top of the sportbike food chain, all their touring bikes, and are really successful with the retro styled bikes. They aren't just building a "retro" look, but the fit finish and materials used are all old school, but with modern braking and power. They've brought in a lot of independents like Roland Sands and others to tell them what the people want. They want people to customize the r18 and the r nineT bikes.
