Come to think about it as a band geek I played at every football game my school played.

Sounds to me like RT is committed to having his fun regardless of how it might effect others.
I don't recall my son ever missing a baseball game, HS or college.

Curious, what was CK's reaction when you talked to him about it?

in some ways I get that sports is overdone these days.
but the kid managed a starting spot on a high school team (varsity or JV doesn't matter) and should commit his time there. so I would agree with OP.

Since the parents seem divided on this, as a grandpa I'd stay the hell away from wading in. Yeah..probably too late for that.
If I was the coach..."Kid, you are off the team."

That's a little too easy on the kid, IMO. I'd let him sit the bench the rest of the season instead.

Never mind him expecting his son to blow off his game (and his team), your son in law is an asswipe for even considering going to any game other than his own son's.

Do your best to explain to the "kid" and then let him make his own choice. 120 years ago, someone his age would be working a full time job and maybe supporting a family.
I would explain to the "kid" that a starter position now means a starter position in the future which means more chances of college scouts seeing and being impressed which means more chance of playing at a football powerhouse in college which means a chance a the NFL... where he will have the best "seat" in the stadium for all the games. (sure it is a small chance, but the chance could well be 0. And of the 2 NFL players I know, one got into UF on athletics and the other was an full ride academic scholarship for engineering school, he just liked to play football) |

The other thing: as a dad, I can't imagine missing my kid's football game for someone else's (particularly when I don't even know those someone elses).
(However, contrary to some on this board, I think there is a difference between rec league vs school level sports. At the lower levels, where everyone understands that commitment is a little less intense--otherwise we'd all be playing at higher levels--it may be OK to miss a game for something else. But at the school level, skipping a game for something elective is not OK.)

It's responsibility.
If he can't do it, the coach will should find someone who can. rjp

Geezus, what a stupid ass hole.
Your son in law, Patrick, not you. ![]() One of the most basic values we learn as young people, that we carry throughout our lives, is to honor our commitments. His team is counting on him. If his own father is teaching him that that does not matter, well then, the poor kid has little hope in this regard. I would almost suggest it might be something you can help the kid with, as someone he knows and respects. Granted, I am not yet a grandparent, but I think I can appreciate the dilemma this presents to you. It's got to be very uncomfortable telling a grandkid that his own father is wrong about something, and I'm sure you want to maintain a good relationship with your daughter, at least. Tough situation, Patrick. You are kinda between a rock and a hard place. Good luck... to both you and the kid, especially.

Depends on the kid. What does he want to do? He really shouldn't have been put in this situation where he has to disappoint a part of himself and someone else no matter what he chooses but there is a life lesson in that too.
Is RT the father of CK? I'd hope CK chooses to play for his team instead of watch someone else's and that his dad would choose to watch CK instead of whoever. In the end, we're not talking about letting your USMC platoon down but still... |

Unless he is sick or other very serious issues, if I was the coach I would knock him back to water boy. Of course I seriously doubt there are ANY written rules in place for the team sooooooo he "legally" probably can't do anything as his a-hole father would threaten a law suit?!
Of course I was in the "old Navy" and we had rules we had to go by back then...…. |

That’s an aspect I had not considered. But it is a message RT has consistently conveyed to his sons. “You don’t matter.”

Yeah that crossed my mind as well. I’ve missed a lot of stuff that I’d like to do because one of my kids has an event.

my "stayed at a Holiday Inn" sense says that son in law is jealous of his own kid. It's up to you to help your grandson do the right thing.
