Dumbass Son in law does it again
This seems like a no brainer to me, but know the diversity of opinions in this place I'm sure someone with side with RT (our son in law).
Our grandson (CK) worked his tail off this summer and made the starting lineup on his Jr Varsity football team. He did great in their opening game last week. So RT gets tickets to their favorite Big 10 game Saturday for some of his drunkass friends and for his sons . If CK goes to the Big 10 game he will miss his second game as a starter. His coach is furious and gave him a talking to about letting the team down. His mother echoed the coach. I tried to tell him as a starter he is a leader, he needs to show the team he is a leader and step up and do the right thing. I asked him if going to this game was worth throwing away all his hard work and giving up a starting position on his team. He doesn't think he'll lose his starting position, his dad says he won't and if he does he has a crappy coach (for expecting discipline and commitment? I don't think so). If they have 12 players on the team this coach will have CK on the bench for the rest of the season and I support that. I'm sure there are dissenting opinions here. Flame on.

What was his answer on whether he was willing to throw it all away?
Also is this his passion? Is he really good for his age? Is it his ticket to college/pro? Looking at the long term... |

Good job, Dad. Sounds like CK will lose his spot and likely not learn the lesson you sometimes need to sacrifice for things you want. "Coach is a jerk, don't worry about it" is not how you teach life lessons.

Doesn't a player get kicked off the team if he misses a game - in particular as a starter?
It's not like he even has a good reason. I'm a little surprised the kid doesn't tell his dad to "GTFO....I'm playing football - not watching football."

What does CK want?
Everything else is superfluous. Me? I played HS football. I never missed a game unless I was hurt. It is a team sport: If CK misses the game as a starter, the TEAM suffers. That is the lesson. Your SIL is an *******.

If CK is okay with skipping his own game for 'fun', then RT has raised a dimwit, and there's not much you can do about that. Offer an opinion. Once.
In the grand scheme of life this one event is nothing, it just predicts a poor future for the son.

Curious as to what CK's teammates think (probably just like all of us), 'cause peer pressure is real. Were I the coach...he would probably not see much playing time, if any, the rest of the season. Sports will teach ya life lessons imo....he'd have one
.I just can't imagine what the SIL is thinking....or mebbe he ain't .

I 100% agree with you, my attitude with my kids is that if you commit to something, it’s your #1 priority. No way in hell I would permit skipping a game, especially at that level. Also, if he does skip they should bench his ass. It’s not fair to the kids who do show up and put in the effort. My oldest son is currently a freshman playing football so this is pretty relevant to me.

Can't miss the game.
RT is an idiot. Hopefully I'm wrong, would be thrilled to be, but this does not bode well for the young mans future.

Commitment doesn't know varsity from junior varsity. He must play or walk away for good. Frankly if CK is even considering not playing then I suspect that there is no commitment.

Grandson should play his high school game. Unfortunately, that pre-empts the college game. It's a no-brainer.

I sure would like to see CK listen to his coach, and then set his Dad straight.
Tell him to take another friend and go to the big game. That he wants to play with his team. If I was his dad The JV game would be the big game to go to. What was he thinking? RT is not only clueless, but a distraction from what is right. Cheers Richard Last edited by tevake; 09-07-2018 at 03:02 PM.. |

I wasn't involved in that kind of sports, so I don't know how they usually work, but I was taught that sometimes you have to sacrifice. The kid needs to go play in his game instead of going to the other game. He's a part of a team, and there's a game. I would assume if he busted his butt, that he must want this. At his age, it's easy to get distracted and not understand responsibility, so that's when the parent should be stepping in to teach him.
Kind of sounds like RT is a bit of a twit. Besides, it sounds like the kid probably doesn't need to be hanging out with the other guys anyway. Don't need a young kid hanging out with a bunch of drunks.
