Let them fuel up as much as they want, one stop minimum, sticky tires only, change them a lot.

What used to be a nice afternoon tradition with a couple of pints and a snack has turned into 10 minutes in the morning with the DVR.

I watch Qualifying in 5 minutes.

I watch the race in 10-15 minutes. I watch the first 2-5 laps, then hit X2 or X3 for pretty much the rest of the race. This past Sunday was mostly X3.

Please invest < 2 min of your time here (Massa/Kubika, fuji 2007) - actually FFWD to 50 seconds to see the horrible violations begin ;-)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnxUu36-uYw

and try to imagine how many penalties those 2 would have racked up in today's F1.

That's in a nutshell what is wrong with today's model.

Dang, back when F1 cars SOUNDED like a F1 car should sound. Not the pitiful sound of today. Great clip. Thanks.

Awesome! LOL!, yep, I think in today's ridiculous F1 world both of those two would've had so many penalties they would've been demoted to maybe 4th and 5th. The 3d place guy would've won, and he would've said "hey, this isn't how I like to win normally, but..."

Senna. Monaco.
I say we make today's cars and rules and tracks the same as they were then. But it ain't up to me.

But then again, there have always been bogus rules and enforcement:

Senna vs. Prost the weasel

FF to 2:25

The problem with this is that teams started implemented high noses for better rear downforce right at that time.

With the same rule set and development of the aerodynamic ideas you'd wind up with even uglier cars than there are today.

Take the "x-wing" on top of side pods, legal until a new rule was made about it.

The only way to get what you seem to want would be a spec series; not the rules as they were then.

I find it interesting that I can watch the Senna at Monaco video and at least play along in my head of what that must feel like, sound like, be like to do that. You have a wheel, throttle, brakes and a gearshift. I can allow myself the impertinence that if I got in the car I could get the car around a track. Maybe not very fast but then again maybe not slow either. The modern cars I cannot do the same. Sure you have the same wheel/throttle/brakes/shifter but you also have umpteen controls on the wheel that you have to adjust on the fly. Listen to your engineer. Use the tires in a controlled manner to get them hot but not too much. Same with the brakes. Don't follow too close because the aero disturbance will shred the fronts. Watch out for wind in the turns as that upsets the aero as well. Etc, Etc.

I guess that is a reason that F1 has lost its luster for me as I can no long play Walter Mitty. I cannot begin to imagine driving the car and paying attention to all the things that you must. The margins have become so small and the engineering so sharp some of the romance has gone. As a geek scientist, I appreciate the what has been achieved in the car and its' capabilities in the right hands but I have become disconnected and not sure if I would call it racing anymore.

Part of what you are seeing is less driver error.

As the $$$ involves gets greater, the talent pool gets bigger.

There are still gentleman drivers today and back then; but at the front there are more hardcore pro's than in times past.

A grid of "Senna's" would make for a parade based on how fast each car was.

What makes F1 interesting is when the margin of a better car and inferior driver overlaps with the margin of an inferior car and a superior driver. These are the moments we tend to remember.

Well, that's what everybody is complaining about innit.. That Mercs are the unbeatable cars..

I don't like F1 anymore, but that's what it is now.. the drivers are boring
they are bio car computers

Max verstapppen was a bit interesting for while when he crashed a lot and did stupid things. But now they flashed his firmware and he's like the others now..

Hole smokes.
What's with all the rake the pink cars have dialed in this weekend?
Downforce must be at a premium here.

Since the season is so predictable - I’m gonna say Leclerc wins in Austria. He likes the track, some good straights for the Ferrari, Mercedes looks twitchy so far, and maybe they’re due for a run of bad luck. Would be fun to watch!

You might not like the look or the sound of the cars, but they are FAST!
1:03.2 lap for the pole and his team mate couldn't get out of the pits.

Tomorrow might be a race!

Have always liked this track, nothing fancy, but usually a good race with lots of action.

BTW 3 place grid penalty for Hamilton. Let's see what he can do with that tomorrow.
