A guy down the road bought a new Case IH tractor last week. We all know because he has it parked in his front yard. I've been meaning to get pics.

I don't have my $250,000 sports car to get attention from anyone, so - not me.

Anyone that likes to eat?

Never complain about a farmer with your mouth full.

And no farmers give a rats ass what anyone else thinks.

If you live in farm country and you want to get along with your neighbors it’s good to know what they respect. Sports cars don’t cut it with most of the ones around here. An airplane, a truck, a combine, or a tractor will get a conversation started.
At the diner last fall I sat next to a guy at breakfast who said during harvest months he usually ate in the “International Cafe” - his IHC combine.

Oh, I don’t know about that. When your work product is out there for everyone to see there is a lot of pressure to make it look good. They don’t work in the fields until 3 AM just to make more money. Working hard enough to get a crop planted under the weather gets huge props, as well as jealously and all the ugliness that entails. The low talk at the breakfast cafe can sound like a bunch of seventh grade girls gossiping and cutting the “others” down. The goal is to be the “other” that they all gossip about. It can get pretty vicious.

This is the biggie for me, though more for motorcycle riding than driving. In Chicago, I either went for a ride at 3 a.m. or rode in traffic for over an hour to hit a patch of open road. Now, by the time the bike's warmed up I'm on empty country roads.

That said, the longer I'm back here the more I remember why teen-aged me wanted out so bad.

914 automatic?? there is no such thing.
At least not by Porsche.

EDIT , Byron mentions sportomatic, but they are not automatics at all.
They still require shifting. But I'll admit , never heard of Sporto 914's before.

Was that even by Porsche or did somebody in the US convert a regular 914 with a 911 Sporto matic gearbox?? because it's not even in PET.

If you look at the Factory workshop repair manual for the 914. The transmission section has a complete write up on the R&R of the sportomatic unit. They thought hard about making it. Evidently they made a few prototypes and then pulled the plug. So since it was never sold as a production car, no spare parts were made. No PET listing.

I’ll take the respect of farmers over most other people. As for impressing anyone, I don’t give a schit about that.

Not me. If they are nice people, great. If not, fk them. From what people in the sticks seem to be saying, a lot of them are pricks who you need to jump through hoops to be accepted by. People like that can kiss my ass. I'll take city folks any day.

Cue the "Green Acres" theme...

I think you might be mistaken. I once lived next door to a couple with two 914s. His was a 5-speed (license plate: STICKO) and hers was a Sportomatic (license plate: SPORTO). Both purchased new from the dealer.

I live in a small city and am fortunate to see exotics and other interesting cars on a fairly regular basis. I was just following a Ferrari Teatarosa across town the other day and I’ve seen stuff like a 289 Cobra, a Porsche 959, a Ferrari 250GT Lusso, a Mercedes 300SL, a Bugatti Veyron, a Ferrari 275GTB, a Lotus Europa, XKEs and various late-model Lambos, Porsches and Ferraris cruising around on local roads.

And as far as the farmer/exotic car thing goes, I certainly wouldn’t expect a farmer to be impressed by an exotic or sports car any more than I would expect a classic/sports/exotic car guy to be impressed by a combine. Two complete different worlds for the most part and to each his own.
