It must be horrible in Europe with 100+ temps, and so little air conditioning and so little ice in drinks. I can't imagine. It would be a challenge to air condition some building built before there was a USA or before the calendar had more than three digits in the year.
Like most people that live in a hot area, AC is the best invention of all, after electricity and bottled beer. We jsut go from AC car to AC buildings just like the reverse of the Yankees in winter. And I will take 110 heat index any day over the -35 like Chicago had last winter any day. I am going to visit the national severe storms lab in Norman, OK today. It will be interesting. |

Yes, I have some of the Frog Togs, Jim and they work OK for a very brief period but on days the humidity is high, they are not as effective. My strategies are: 1. Avoid working outside as much as possible from May through October 2. Work in very short segments - then beat it back inside the truck and run the AC or go back home to re-group as needed 3. Bring plenty to drink & towels to wipe sweat off 4. Bring and eat fruit such as bananas and watermelon and trail bars kept in a cooler 5. Wear big straw hats 6. Coordinate as much as possible to work in the shade and avoid working in direct sun at hottest time of the day. 7. Charge as much as possible - maybe even more - for any work done during this time of year (which helps sustain rule #1) |
According to my weather app we are comfy on the verge of sticky. Disrespectful comes in August and September. July is typically oppressive.
https://photos.smugmug.com/General-P...-nNRgbzk-L.jpg I just finished up, my other crew should be right behind me. Just as the index was going triple digits. I have a 3 step plan. 1. Drink lots of water. 2. Start early get back early. My day is 50% field 50% office I am now riding a desk until about 5 - 6 PM. 3. Stay covered up, long sleeves and a floppy hat. I do not get to choose when I work on projects I take them as they come. I always seem to be on the beach in the winter and in the swamps in the summer. Never fails. If I get one of those rare days when I am on the beach in the summer I celebrate. |

:D:D:D I admitted I am a wimp when it comes to cold, there is no such thing as too hot for me. I have summer blood, I do not fair cold well. I knew when I was 18 I had enough of winter and moved to Florida from NY. |
just spent time in VA and SC. Thinking I prefer my 105 with 5% humidity in Scottsdale to 90 degrees and 50% humidity there.

Then we drove north of Boulder and into the mountains and there was snow on the ground - same day. Nice and cool at night....almost chilly. Well that left an impression. What a beautiful state! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1561656494.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1561656494.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1561656494.JPG |

The 40s to 80s work for me. I’m a senior citizen and I suck at temperature extremes. |
63 and sunny in Seattle! Topping out at 75 over the next 10 days.

His blood work comes back stellar every damn time. cholesterol levels great everything good. He eats Wendy's a few times a week. We tease him about that. He is also not retired because he does not want to sit still, he loves his job and would be lost if he was not there. He manages a Cabinet Manufacturing shop with about 30-40 employees. No AC he sweats his ass off every day. My wife and I are convinced all the sweating is what keeps him so clean, he is filtering out all the toxins in his system every day. |
Nice old photos of Colorado, Baz! It’s a beautiful state but it’s getting hotter.
It’s been the coolest year I can remember here in SoCal. We’ve only had one short heatwave. I’m not complaining. :) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1561664489.png |

Here in Chicago, summer arrived on Tuesday. The temp finally reached into the mid to upper 80s. It still rains almost everyday, but summer finally arrived. On a more positive note I just got my electric bill and it is half of what it normally should be for this time of year. I just turned the air on this past Monday.
The weather is certainly crazy this year. |

Mind you we get sun about one day in three. It's gotta be Lake Erie that does it. |
We went to Savannah, GA in August. One day the heat index was 135! It was like a steam bath.
Just walking in the shaded parking garage from the hotel lobby to my 911 got me sweaty. We went to eat at a really cool old house that is a restaurant called The Olde Pink House. Amazing fact is the mansion predates the formation of the United States. It faces Reynolds Square. It was built in the British colony of Georgia in the late 1700's by merchant, statesman, and loyalist James Habersham. It blows my mind that the southern belles wore multiple layers of clothes and survived 135 heat index as just another day with no electricity at all, so not even a fan. |
Baz, I have a room in hell right next to yours - full burn ass sweat bath in North TexASS now with no pause in store until late Nov-early Dec!

The A/C stopped working in my work truck today too. Probably just Freon, which I have on hand.
I have the kind with the leak stopper so hopefully it will do the trick. Survival Mode - engaged! :p |

So our humidity has been lower this week. Right now it's only 60% with temp at 80. I know it won't last - but wow - so much nicer for working outside! |
Im somewhat relieved to hear you guy talking about this southern heat like that.
I've been in the fl panhandle for two years now and am just hiding out in the AC most afternoons these days. And wondering if I will ever adapt to the temps and humidity around here. First summer here I was digging in fence posts and hanging panels on them. And was melting in the process. I end d up getting so dehydrated that I couldn't recover even over night. My brother suggested Gator Aid, which replenished something that I had sweated out and helped me to get feeling better, and able to continue working. Now I don't try doing too much in the afternoons. Have to get started earlier in the day and knock off during the hot times. Relieved cause I was beginning to think it was just part of getting older. Whew, thanks guys. Cheers Richard |

Richard, I lose 3-4 pounds of water weight each day, even though I drink as much water and Gatoraid as I seemingly can (not enough, obviously) - not pleasant!
|
Yep I can totally believe that R T. I've never sweated so much and have lived my whole life in the tropics. Sweating out a tee shirt is one thing but soaking your shorts and underwear is new to me.
Man bridge, I love those high mountain passes in Colo in the spring and summer, don't think I'd like it there so much in the winters. Cheers Richard |
