It happened on my Android tablet. I just disabled Java, so let's see if that helps

I tried disabling JavaScript on my phone, but it rendered YouTube videos unplayable. That’s not worth it for me, so I’m back to the ****ing ads.

I'm on a 'droid, so ya can disable JS overall, but select sites like YT, etc. and leave it enabled for those. I clear cache & cookies so often that I just leave it off until I need it. It's not a panacea but stops most bs before it starts....YMMV.

No downside for Pelican forums....jmho.
You would have to turn it on to watch embedded YouTube vids here in the forum, correct?

I have FF and an adblocker. Many posted links in threads here won't allow you to view the page with an ad blocker on.

Pick your poison.

Yes I am logged in.

Seems to be Limited to desktop view on mobile for now.

Anyone else seeing this?
I don't see any ads. Well, I see a tiny one between individual posts.

Yes, lots of things on lots of websites require java for the site to work correctly.

Yep, Google.

In the screen shot below, you can see 2 things, the red underline shows the only ads that I see using firefox, ublock and noscript.

The dialog box in the top right shows the 3 sites that have java script on this page. I have 2 enabled and 1 disabled and the site has full functionality without all of the annoying ads.

On my old iPhone 4s, I had to turn off java script to make the phone usable with the internet. I was getting all kinds of full page ads, locked screens and redirects to stupid or sex sites. No, I don’t use them.

With my iPhone 8, I’m not seeing any ads or problems with JS.

I missed this earlier...that's pretty cool...years ago I detected these by just taking a peek at the IP connections....from a "real" computer back then

My phone is an ancient 'droid....

FF + Ublock Origin + NoScript = Notaphone

.....unless I'm really missing something obvious...and sometimes I do that

I've recently notice a new ad "feature."

When surfing the forum using a phone and the desktop setting, I sometimes get a full page ad when I click on a thread that I have to close before I am taken to the thread.

Really annoying. I hope it's not something that the current owners of this site had added to boost their revenue.

Hi guys. I just spoke with the Pelican Tech staff, and they let me know that this was a change that was instituted by Google, and not Pelican. They have a fix for this and have rolled it out to the Peach and 986 forums first in order to test. I suspect they will be rolling out that solution here to stop all of this annoyance, once the testing is done.

Thanks,

Wayne

I want to say that I've had a site or two that required it to run properly. I generally only allow sites that I have to allow to get a site to run correctly, and it's got to be a site that I really want to get to.

A basic question for some:
-How do you allow basic ads for the hosting site to continue their ad income revenue and maintain a business?
-While at the same time, how do you prevent basic personal information from being exploited.

I have a Synology NAS drive on my home network. These things are basically a simple server with limited processor and memory and a bunch of drive bays. Most of them allow you to download/install various applications that will run on them that do all sorts of things. Synology has a "Docker" app available. (Docker is a set of platform as a service products that uses OS-level virtualization to deliver software in packages called containers. Containers are isolated from one another and bundle their own software, libraries and configuration files).

I discovered that it's possible (easy) to install pi-hole in docker, so now my NAS is running pi-hole. It seems to be working really well. I hit a bunch of news sites (www.cnn.com www.usatoday.com, www.dailymail.co.uk, www.telegraph.co.uk, etc...) which seem to be the worst of the worst when it comes to extra crap going on in the background and they fly.

So if you have a nas, you may want to see if it has an option to install pi-hole (so you don't have to buy a raspberry pi or extra server/PC)

Tools like uBlock will allow you to whitelist a specific page or site.
