We had an admin woman that was always away from her desk smoking and then was stressed when management expected her to have her workload complete.
Didn't end well for her.

Another thing that drives me crazy is the guys that spit on the sidewalk or smoking area that they use to slowly kill themselves. So disgusting. Vaping is no better and might actually be worse for the spitting thing.

While talking about vaping, no grown man should smell like they have been rolling around in a cotton candy machine either. I would take the tobacco smell over that any day.

I wouldn't hire a smoker unless there is an understanding that they smoke at morning coffee, lunch and afternoon coffee. No other times.

I smoked for years, but was always aware that it can offend others, so I was always washing hands, using gum, etc. There are other smokers like me and out there.

I found it way worse to get on the elevator with a bunch of women dowsed in perfume first thing in the morning.

Or the guys that believe that Axe deodorant spray should be liberally sprayed on all body surfaces! Ewww.

Shaun, if you have already hired him then you could help him quit - on avg. a smoker attempts to quit 6 times before they actually do...

If you are paying his healthcare, you might even save money.

OTOH, it might make it harder to fire him later on.

If you have not already hired him then I'd look for another employee...

The two guys who just worked at my house on the roof work smoked. One vapes the other cigs. I found a couple butts in my gutter - surprised I didn't find more.

Nice guys and I feel sorry for them. I didn't say anything to them about their smoking. Since they were on the roof the stink really never went anywhere except up - and away.

I find old lady perfume way, way worse than the smell of cigarette smoke. And old lady perfume is perfectly acceptable just about anywhere.

Full disclosure - I have smoked with Denis in his Porsche. Flame away. But I haven't had a smoke in a while.

I really dislike cigarette smoke. My parents smoked when I was a kid. The worst was long trips in the car, windows up and trapped like in a bad Cheech and Chong movie. Then if I complained, they'd roll down a window and flick the ash out the window which meant that it ended up coming into the back seat where I was. I worked in bars for 5 years when I was younger. I would smell horrible when I came home.

Yes, getting into an elevator is sometimes horrible. Hell, sometimes I get on an elevator and it's empty, but whoever (women mostly, but men too) had so much crap on that you've got to hold your breath.

Vaping is better than smoking. It doesn't smell nearly as bad.

I probably quit 6 to 10 times before it stuck. I haven't had a cigarette since 1979 but I still consider myself (oh wait, this is 2020) - I still identify as a non-practicing smoker.

Non smoker that can smell a smoker a mile away. It smells terrible to me.

Worked at one place where the smokers would hot box it in the parking lot. 🤮

I’m thinking of taking up smoking, so I can take a smoke break every hour while the idiots keep working.

I'm currently on day 28 without a cigarette in my first attempt to quit smoking in almost 40 years after suffering a heart attack/stent placement 10 weeks ago. Oh I'm still "patching" and puffing an e-cig but my sense of smell has increased dramatically. So much so that I told the ladies at the Cardiac Rehab the other day that I'm finding that the inside of my home stinks, so I've got to either clean up my house or take up smoking again....I know which one is easier!

But to the OP, what you gonna do when your new non smoker employee takes up smoking?

We sure live in an AMAZING society where someone has it so good that the smell of cig from 20 minutes ago is the worst thing they have to experience about a person. There are a lot of things that "smell terrible"in this world. If the lingering cigarette smell is the only thing that keeps you from hiring talent, you have a serious first world problem my man.

Smokers tend to be wound a lot less tight than the "Cigarette smells OFFEND ME" types. What sort of person are you looking for? Someone free scent, or someone that does the job?

Look out.

It is not like he is trying to hire a sales person at a boutique. Since it is an automotive related plating and coating facility I would imagine there are some foul smells from time to time.

My house was built in 1963 I don't smell smoke until I drill a large hole in old wood.

On the lighter side

Bob "Joe, do you shower after sex"

Joe "yes"

Bob, "you need to get with your wife more often"

Ya', it's incredible just how delicate and dainty some of these "car guys" are (that includes you, OP Shaun ) - a buncha fookin olfactory pantywaists up in here!
