Rice cookers anyone?
I've always cooked it in a pot but thinking a steamer would be better. Anyone doing a cooker? Recos?

Can't go wrong with anything made by Zojirushi.
I believe most Japanese use a rice cooker.

On our second Kitchenaide one now, small compact, but can make quite a bit of rice, and steam.

I’ve used one all my life.
My current unit is going in 10-12 years. It’s a NATIONAL brand. I only cook rice with it but it can do more. The Achilles is the rice bowl. It’s some non stick coated bowl and the coating has been compromised. They are not replaceable. Something about a rice cooker company; I’ve never seen a replacement vessel option. If I were to buy one today, I would go with one that comes with a stainless steel inner bowl. My mom has one and it’s awesome. Non-scratch, easy to clean. Her brand is ELEPHANT brand. ‘They are all fire and forget. Perfect rice every time.

My wife has been using a Zojirushi rice cooker for many years. It's probably a 10-12 cup model.

Seriously, I didn’t know you can cook rice in a pot on the stove until recently. We’ve used a rice cooker since childhood.

It does have a big stainless steel bowl you pull out and toss in the dishwasher. I did watch a few YouTube videos and every person mentioned the rice can get sticky although they talk of "perfect rice" every time. I think it's a good bet after practice but not plug and play like the Zojirushi (which also makes the Elephant).

I have a cheap black and decker rice cooker. Probably cost twenty bucks brand new.
Holds maybe 3 cups, which is perfect for a single guy. It gets used almost every day, either for rice, or for my steel cut oatmeal in the AM. Love it.

Rice cooker all the way here.
Now the real question is, do you use measurements for the water, or measure by your first knuckle? |

Our instant pot is terrible at making rice. Not sure why there is such a big difference since it seems they should work the same way, but our plain old rice cooker works much better.
Also, big +1 for Zojirushi. I don't have one now, but i've used them a lot and they are foolproof. Quote:

I gave mine away, had for a long time too (20 years?) Hardly ever used it, had been a 2 to1 for 20 on the range/stove for too long.

Hi Flatbutt- I've still got my original Zoji from 1997. My brother asked me what I wanted as a wedding present, and I said I wanted a real (American market) Japanese rice cooker. I knew he had chosen well based on the floral graphics alone. I use it at least once a week, and its been absolutely bulletproof. 23 years and still produces a bowl of perfect rice. I suspect the newer models are just as strong. FYI- Aroma also makes a good rice cooker as well!

National brand. A wedding gift from 28 years ago! Still going strong. Use it once a week or more. Needing replacement but all the new ones are pretty gimmicky.

Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy for a lot of years. Bulletproof and so impressed that it is a frequently chosen wedding gift when all the nieces and nephews get married.
Daughter got an Instant Pot and says the rice out of it is so inconsistent she is now looking for a Zojirushi |

If I make it in a rice cooker, I use the scale on the side. I vary the water a little according to how fresh the rice is (NEW CROP!) and the type of rice and what I'm going to do with it. I make better rice in a plain old pot but I do get busy sometimes and burn it, which pisses me off to no end. No chance of that with a rice cooker, which is why I even have one at all. I don't leave the cooker on warm for very long after cooking the rice, as I don't like the crust that some cultures seem to prize. |

Cuckoo brand rice cooker here. Wife is Korean so we went with her people’s stuff rather than Zojirushi from Japan. I always precisely measure rice and water, and the cooker delivers perfect rice every time. Wife prefers when I make the rice over when she makes it...she doesn’t measure precisely.

+1 I'm Asian, so I've never cooked rice in a pot. I didn't even know about Uncle Ben's (or other non-instant rice on a stove) until maybe college. Still don't think I've ever had a box of it.
