As well they should, IMO.
Our sailors don't need to hear that kind of 'crap' from a civilian, especially one that is only 'acting'.

Modly gooned it. As a Naval Academy graduate he should have known better. His seventeen years in the Navy were not stellar, however.

They just played his 'talk' to the sailors on CNN.
Gooned it for sure.

If we've learned anything from the Nuremberg and Hague War Crimes Trials is that simply following orders does not insulate you from legal or moral peril. Had Cozier not elevated the concern and assuming his fear of help did not arrive in time (and heaven forbid it didn't lead to a nuclear incident) and dozens or more of sailors died, his defense of "I was awaiting orders" or "I was following orders" would not have protected him.

I just hope the Capt survives the virus.

Your non-partisan participation is appreciated, Snapper33.
I think the Dem's are less afraid of the Prez than their counterparts are.

My opinion is that he should have let his subordinates deal with the issue. As for the rest of it, I think Congress has better things to do than ***** about the military. Some seem to go about their normal course of business, others head for the nearest soapbox and microphone. Frankly, I’m tired of their constant *****ing.

Politics have never been a part of my support for this action, especially "parse[ing] on behalf of Orangehead", geez. COC is paramount for good order and discipline, but it is not an absolute. There are a plethora of situations where Senior Officers have skipped subordinate authority. My support is based upon my support for this captain's relief, and nothing more. I have many questions. These questions are to be asked and answered by those who currently have the "watch" and we will see. But here is what I want to know. What did this Captain do to isolate his sick from the remainder of the crew? I was underwhelmed to see his crew so massed when he departed. An Aircraft Carrier has tremendous resources available. If at sea, why did he not utilize those resources to remove the sick? If in Guam, why not force the issue and simply evacuate the ill; like show up at sick call? In either scenario he would be boldly acting without drawing public attention and preventing infection of the remainder of the crew. If I understand the situation, the ship was down 150. With the loss of 150 (or even 500), could he have maintained his operational effectiveness or would that put the ship completely out of action? If he had acted then maybe he would earn the Hero moniker, but he did not. He waited for direction from above rather than acting. When his superiors seemed to him to not respond fast enough, he threw a fit, in the open. He accused his superiors of not caring about Sailors; and he did it publically. That is just gaul, not courage. Not good. Admiral Grace Hooper (one of my favorites) is known for her saying, "It is often easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission." He failed there as well. The Comments on this article from the Naval Institute site are worth the read. The article is secondary to the many Naval Officers commenting. Modly didn't help the situation. He should have chosen his words more carefully.

I was surprised to read Modly gave a speech on the carrier and then to hear his choice of words. He certainly screwed the pooch on this one.

The irony of Modly belittling the captain for being stupid for his letter getting out to the press when he did the same thing with his ill advised speech. Does that mean he should fire himself?

Modly doesn't strike me as being the sharpest tool in the shed.

The US Navy, and I say this respectfully, has had a bad run in the last few years. There's been a steady stream of worrying events, from the Iranian seizing of the patrol boat, the LCS and Ford-class carrier combat worthiness, to the collisions, to this sad affair of ignoring CoC, the SECNAV piling on, and now DJT suggesting he might lean in... sheesh.
Our storied Navy deserves better.

At the risk of sounding like an old fart (...get outta' my Harbor!!!) I could not agree more.
My friend with the son flying off the TR has two other pilot sons in the Navy. They all went to the Naval Academy and they have either left the Navy or plan to when their obligated service is up. The stories are incredible.
