My first board in high school was a 7' Robert August fish.
It looked a lot like this one but was blue.
it was a big thick board, perfect for the long rollers at San Onofre.
I bought it from Robert in his shop in Huntington because of the movie and because we were both goofy-footers.
Cost me nearly the whole summer's pay and brought it home on the bus. My vw bug was broke down at the time but buying the board was more important than fixing the car.

I could never ride something that small (that's what she said) - my last board was 11' 6"

Killer trivia for that movie, even if seriously dated:

Quote:
Jan and Dean both were scheduled to appear in the film, supporting Fabian, who was borrowed from 20th Century Fox. Jan and Dean were pulled by Columbia after Dean’s friend, Barry Keenan, became involved in the kidnapping of Frank Sinatra, Jr. in December 1963.[6] They were replaced by Tab Hunter and Peter Brown.[5][7]

Quote:
Of the three surfer leads, raven-haired Peter Brown was made into a blonde by makeup artist Ben Lane (to match the hair of Brown’s surfing double – and to keep all three men from being brunets), which required his girlfriend, the blonde Barbara Eden, to have auburn hair; likewise the dark-haired Shelley Fabares – who is paired with the dark-haired Fabian, became a Scandinavian blonde. Susan Hart’s black hair was sufficiently different from her male counterpart Tab Hunter’s that no change was required.

Barry Keenan (born 1940) is an American businessman, best known as the mastermind behind the 1963 kidnapping of Frank Sinatra, Jr.[1]

At the age of 21, Keenan was already successful in the business world, as well as being the youngest member of the Los Angeles Stock Exchange.[1] Following a car accident, Keenan became penniless and addicted to painkillers, and he eventually hatched the kidnap-for-ransom scheme and enlisted others to help.[2] Keenan, along with Johnny Irwin and Joe Amsler, conspired to kidnap Frank Sinatra, Jr.[3]
Keenan had a psychiatric condition in which he heard voices, and felt that his plan was blessed by God; since he intended to eventually pay the money back, he did not think the kidnapping was immoral.[4]
After successfully nabbing Sinatra Jr. from the Harrah's Lodge at South Lake Tahoe, Keenan made contact with Frank Sinatra, Sr. to make ransom arrangements.
Sinatra initially offered one million dollars, but Keenan demanded significantly less instead, $240,000.[5]
Despite the nature of the crime, Keenan felt that he was bringing the Sinatra family closer together and assisting the Sinatras in other intangible ways.[4][5]

Sinatra paid the ransom and the three men released his son.
Within days, all three conspirators were apprehended by the FBI.
Keenan was sentenced to life plus seventy-five years in prison for his crimes, but only served four and a half years before he was released,[6] because it was determined that he was legally insane at the time of the crime
.[4]

After his release, Keenan became successful as a real estate developer.[7]
LOL, Real estate, the safety net.

^ don't know how to feel about that Johnson smith company closing. They've been ripping kids off for over 100 years, but are part of my childhood that for some reason that does the nostalgia thing.
