I'd smelled skunk hundreds of times while driving in the country. I always wondered "what's the big deal?" because it didn't really smell bad. Then one day, I drove down a road that I'm guessing one got hit on very soon before I drove by or maybe had been pestered by a dog/coyote very near the road that I drove down. Holy moly, that smelled bad (and it wasn't remotely a direct hit!). I get it now, I can't even imagine the stink of a direct hit. It's interesting that at a low enough dose not only is it not bad, but it's actually a little sweet smelling.

LOL!

my visitor from last year. I've had a few sightings, but this is the time that I was able to get a photo.

Wait until your dog gets nailed in the chest and face, and runs in through the doggie door. Holding him from rubbing on the carpet, and taking him to our laundry room for a bath to reduce his stink is a blast. After a few minutes your nose just stops smelling much. Weird sensation.

There’s a campsite in NC we used to go to when riding our mountain bikes. At night, sitting around the fire, a family of skunks would come out and sniff around. If you were not wearing shoes, they would lick your toes. The park ranger had told us about them, so we were prepared.

So, did you go barefoot? The skunks were probably wondering what that horrid smell was. lol

I've run across skunk roadkill and the smell reminded me of when I ate too much pomelo and had pomelo farts.

At about the midpoint of Hadrian’s Wall, another fort was built on a scarp of land overlooking a large lake. The Romans called the place Vercovicium. Today it is known as Housesteads, England, and is one of the best preserved of the fortifications along the wall. The main features of the fort were constructed during the years A.D. 122 – 138. The fort measured 186 meters by 112 meters, encompassing an area of 2.2 hectares. The foundations of walls, towers and gates can be seen. Other sights are the principia and praetorium, horrea, barracks, and of course the famous latrine. Temples and necropolises have been excavated by archaeologists since the 1800’s. Housesteads is owned by the National Trust and administered by English Heritage. There is an admission fee and reservations may be required during peak season.

Giant Amethyst geode crystals from Uruguay.
Amethyst is a variety of quartz composed of a higher level of iron, which results in the crystal's characteristic purple color. Geodes may look like a potato on the outside (in this case, a massive one!), so the stone must be cut to reveal the wonderful crystals and colors inside.
