Depends a lot about who died and when. There's different needs by the family and community depending on the circumstances.

Vash, I suspect that if you died suddenly, you'd get a pretty sweet funeral whether you wanted one or not.

My FIL was very social and active in his church and community where he'd lived for 40 years. He was also a bit of a character. He died after a relatively short (months not years) battle with cancer. His funeral was quite special and well attended. The stories and outpouring of sympathy were terrific.

My Dad died about 2 years later. He'd battled Alzheimers for 10 years. Part of what makes AD so nasty is that the illness is so extended. It's easy for relationships dwindle. You come to realize that the "people" you know and love are actually their mind. Their death spans a decade as their mind slips away. My Dad wanted to be cremated, and he'd not have wanted a big fuss - - he didn't get one. But it was nice to see some old friends come back to pay their last respects. It meant a lot for my mom. For me, a big funeral for my dad would have been hard. I was exhausted and ready to move on.

I don't want a funeral either - - seems like a waste of money - - and I don't like seeing people sad. But I totally get that my family may feel otherwise. And if they feel so inclined, I'd prefer they throw a really good party with an open bar and a band.

I just told my wife a couple of days ago I'd better get on it as far as arranging my cremation. Like most of you, I plan for a simple cremation. As a matter of fact I was checking out cremation services today and looking at urns (Costco only had a choice of two, but they're cheap on Amazon too). I told my wife I want her to rent a small plane and dump my ashes over a place named Lake Basin in the Sierras. I was always drawn to & loved that place. Other than that, I don't plan to have her tell people when I die. If they ask about me, she can tell them.

Funerals are about the people still living. The dead don't care... But I like the idea of my children having a place to visit me.

My dad passed 22 years ago and I still miss him. Visiting his grave makes me feel better.

Wife and I are both being cremated. When I was in the Navy, I wanted to be buried at sea. We had a couple of sea burials for crew members. Very moving ceremony. My sister and b.i.l. Live on the water in L.I. He said he’d take my ashes out in the sound and spread them over the water. I think it’s illegal to do that, but who’s gonna know? Either that or my wife will put them in the compost pile for growing tomatoes!

My $1500 no frills cremation is setup and paid for. A friend did even better - she gave her body to science = free! Hey, once you are not here anymore, you are not here anymore. The pomp and circumstance of a funeral is a joke.

We scattered my dad into a river out of a friends back yard. Like you said, who's going to know.

If you have any silver or gold teeth/crowns...be sure to include those in your am't paid.

As a Catholic I’ll have a church funeral, but that’s basically free. Don’t really care about the whole coffin thing and definitely don’t want a viewing because that’s just traumatic. My biggest thing is that I want my family and friends to all get together over a ton of alcohol and tell stories about all the stupid stuff that I did. THAT would be worth the money.

So, how many funerals have we gone to out of obligation? Why would I want to put my friends through that? My remains? I'm not there - I've moved to a new location (per my belief). No need to spend thousands of dollars to dress it up, put in a pretty box, and bury it. I told my family I will honor whatever they want done if they pass before me but, I don't want a funeral so they can do whatever they feel they need if I go first. I told my wife "surprise me".

The memorial service I had to go to Saturday turned out to be not as bad as expected. It was an informal luncheon and there were 20 people there. About 10 of them got up and told shared memories of the dead person. There were lots of more private conversations and stories, a fair amount of laughter. In the end I came away from it feeling a sense of closure. It was like we all got together and acknowledged that she was really gone. I hope they do something like that for me.

Been having an ongoing discussion here about what will happen. I am dead set(pun intended) about no funeral or memorial of any kind. As an atheist, the ultimate sleight would be having people praying over/for me. The wife feels that some sort of get together should happen shortly after I step onto the lonesome prairie for closure purposes. Hey, closure is never seeing me again and seeing the irreverent obit I wrote in the paper.
Burn my azz and scatter me on a favorite fishing lake and a ski slope. I would have a platform built in my woods up north and let the scavengers recycle me if I could get away with it. Even more $$ saved.
