How are you going to design the support structure and how do you attach the top and base?
I'll just get some pre-fab legs from amazon,,, I do want to make a river table with a tensegrity base... Ill try that on a smaller scale..

Are you going to put some more wood “islands” in the voids or will it be all epoxy?
I've been giving that a lot of thought... this table is going to take a lot of resin... which beyond cost may be hard to cure.. epoxy cures from exothermic action... so heat... large volume of resin = a lot of heat.. could be problematic.

I've thought about using aquarium gravel or sand to make sand bars, or islands... perhaps wood.. I'm goin to the lumber yard tomorrow to look at some burls.. I've used sand on other project to make a beach..

$800. for the slab? Yikes.
You can spend more...

I could get a few projects out of this..

Yeah, nothing surprising about it. The porch is angled away from the house as it should be. I don't remember the details about the supports RE: house --> porch (whether they are all one or added on or what. But it wouldn't surprise me if at some point the house was leveled and the porch intentionally allowed to droop (water run-off) or just got that way over time with less attention paid to the porch.

The left room is ~9.5' wide, then ~7' hall, then ~11' room and ~6' porch.

Most of the house studs that I've seen (walls and ceilings) are on roughly 24" centers.

Last week I put a post in the middle of my flat roof garage. I raised that roof pond 2" in the center with a floor jack. You guessed it, 2x 4 rafters crossing a 2 x 8 beam. Those are the actual net dimensions but not enough for built up roofs.

I guess a post in the middle of a bedroom would not be handy.

Last big reno I did I put 2 steel beams under a 2nd floor in the kitchen ceiling. Contractors before me had removed walls and failed to add support. One upstairs door was 2" out of level at the opening. It's a quarter inch out now. Not bad as you can't really see it with the door cut the same.

I used to do that stuff all the time. I actually had fun listening to a big pops while jacking.

Wow $1400 for non quarter sawn sans fiddle back or anything interesting. It's just a boring and very expensive hunk of wood.

I took this pic a month ago in my buddy's shop. This is a slab he milled up from a big Sugar Pine he dropped 2 years ago. Actually the biggest Sugar ever recorded -16' at the butt. He's making tables and selling slabs. It's boring too except for the trees history. He has a pic of John Muir sitting at the base. Unfortunately the giant succumbed to to those horrible pine beetles a few years ago. I can get you a big slab for fraction of what they want for that on line white oak. Not sure what the the freight bill would be though

I guess its what the market can bear around here... but it not like the guy is out of stock often... he has slabs that have obviously been there for years

Exactly which is why I wont be buying it....

Its a piece that looks to be taken from near the center of the tree... It might be nice for a skilled furniture maker...but I like the wood with scars and character...

Not sure if the guy can quarter saw... he has a horizontal wood mill

The slab of pine is boring as well...

gregpark 06-05-2024 05:20 PM

Yep, the only character these pine slabs have is the history of the tree. He has stacks and stacks of this stuff.

Wow, that's REALLY cool history! It looks like there's a little grain/character to the wood, but not much. I've seen some pretty pine/fir wood, maybe not walnut/maple nice, but that, at least in the photo, does look pretty featureless.

Maybe something from a crotch would have more character. Or maybe sugar pine is just super boring.

You can make an interesting table with a boring top by focusing on the base. I made this coffee table several years ago using a slab of Cypress. I bought it from a different buddy who sells all kinds of slab. I think I paid $180 for it. I made tapered and angled legs, a blanket shelf, a 4' wide drawer and color. First bronze paint then watered down forest green and did a rub through on the corners. Since I wanted the focus to be on the base I cut the live edge of the slab off on the table saw at 22°

That is lovely, and not at all boring.

Thanks. This is in my living room, I kept this one. The legs are laminated maple, the shelf is poplar-kreg jigged and the drawer ½" birch ply

Found the info on the Sugar Pine that produced the slab pictured. Interesting history of a magnificent specimen. The tree grew 5 miles from my mountain cabin. All of us locals were heartbroken when it gave up the ghost.
BTW, the '67 Bronco is not for sale 😔

Have you guys heard of stereotomy? It seems to mostly apply to wood/carpentry, but also can be applied to stone.

I think this stuff is amazing.

Yeah, I've got the scraper, and not enough batteries to use the sanders. I'll probably use the sanders as a final clean-up on spots that the scraper didn't do an adequate job on.

'Lil sanding, you are good to go and button this up, move on the the next phase.

Some methods to the madness... I like to fill checks, ring shakes, spilts with resin prior to applying the finish.. the reason is it seems like bubbles loves to escape from the defect right after the epoxy has kicked.. no bueno..

In this case the Elm is a light wood so I added black pigment to the resin before filling the defects... and in reality they are not defects.. they're character..

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1718055264.jpg

Cleaned up a bit with a belt sander... Ill bring this back to the shop and have them use the 52" drum sander to clean up the remaining shadows from the pigment..

A spritz of alcohol to show what it will look like finished...Pics don't do it justice..
