I've thought about using aquarium gravel or sand to make sand bars, or islands... perhaps wood.. I'm goin to the lumber yard tomorrow to look at some burls.. I've used sand on other project to make a beach.. Quote:
I could get a few projects out of this.. https://1ofakindliveedgeslabs.com/products/live-edge-white-oak-slab-99l-x25-29wx3t But its a boring piece of wood |

I guess a post in the middle of a bedroom would not be handy. Last big reno I did I put 2 steel beams under a 2nd floor in the kitchen ceiling. Contractors before me had removed walls and failed to add support. One upstairs door was 2" out of level at the opening. It's a quarter inch out now. Not bad as you can't really see it with the door cut the same. I used to do that stuff all the time. I actually had fun listening to a big pops while jacking. |

But its a boring piece of wood[/QUOTE] Wow $1400 for non quarter sawn sans fiddle back or anything interesting. It's just a boring and very expensive hunk of wood. |

I took this pic a month ago in my buddy's shop. This is a slab he milled up from a big Sugar Pine he dropped 2 years ago. Actually the biggest Sugar ever recorded -16' at the butt. He's making tables and selling slabs. It's boring too except for the trees history. He has a pic of John Muir sitting at the base. Unfortunately the giant succumbed to to those horrible pine beetles a few years ago. I can get you a big slab for fraction of what they want for that on line white oak. Not sure what the the freight bill would be though |

Exactly which is why I wont be buying it.... Its a piece that looks to be taken from near the center of the tree... It might be nice for a skilled furniture maker...but I like the wood with scars and character... Not sure if the guy can quarter saw... he has a horizontal wood mill The slab of pine is boring as well... |
Yep, the only character these pine slabs have is the history of the tree. He has stacks and stacks of this stuff.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1717633416.jpg You can make an interesting table with a boring top by focusing on the base. I made this coffee table several years ago using a slab of Cypress. I bought it from a different buddy who sells all kinds of slab. I think I paid $180 for it. I made tapered and angled legs, a blanket shelf, a 4' wide drawer and color. First bronze paint then watered down forest green and did a rub through on the corners. Since I wanted the focus to be on the base I cut the live edge of the slab off on the table saw at 22° |

Thanks. This is in my living room, I kept this one. The legs are laminated maple, the shelf is poplar-kreg jigged and the drawer ½" birch ply

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1717715604.jpg Found the info on the Sugar Pine that produced the slab pictured. Interesting history of a magnificent specimen. The tree grew 5 miles from my mountain cabin. All of us locals were heartbroken when it gave up the ghost. BTW, the '67 Bronco is not for sale 😔 |
Have you guys heard of stereotomy? It seems to mostly apply to wood/carpentry, but also can be applied to stone.
I think this stuff is amazing. https://www.marcadams.com/wp-content...ck-Moore-1.jpg https://timberhomesllc.com/wp-conten...compagnons.png https://timberhomesllc.com/wp-conten...ompagnons.jpeg https://img1.wsimg.com/isteam/ip/a50...:600,cg:true,m http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1717720974.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1717720974.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1717720974.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1717720974.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1717720974.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1717720974.jpg |

Some methods to the madness... I like to fill checks, ring shakes, spilts with resin prior to applying the finish.. the reason is it seems like bubbles loves to escape from the defect right after the epoxy has kicked.. no bueno..
In this case the Elm is a light wood so I added black pigment to the resin before filling the defects... and in reality they are not defects.. they're character.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1718055264.jpg Cleaned up a bit with a belt sander... Ill bring this back to the shop and have them use the 52" drum sander to clean up the remaining shadows from the pigment.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1718055376.jpg A spritz of alcohol to show what it will look like finished...Pics don't do it justice.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1718055464.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1718055464.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1718055695.jpg |
