The shop I buy the wood from makes some impressive furniture..

The guy has a large ( for these parts) horizontal mill, a cargo container converted in to a drying oven... and a few large woodworking machines..

My floor sanding would have been a lot faster 52" at a time.

3'x12' or smaller. Milled at an 1½" but he can make whatever. Gets pretty heavy thicker than that

So it begins.. first pour of 5 or six on this elm table.. The initial pour is to seal any gaps between the elm and the mold (waxed melamine)

Area of pour is about 5sf@2in th

Someone mentioned embedding things in the resin.. I went to the pet store ang got some gravel to make a shoal or bar in the "river" bottom...

I was hesitant to move forward on this but now I have a clear idea of what I want to do.. its going to be the confluence of two rivers.. one emerging from underground joining an already flowing river.. different water mixing and joining...

I ran out of resin... this table is taking a lot..So far I'm pleased with how it is turning out...

And I'm already getting offers for it, My brother will give me $755 for the finished table..

The wood alone was $750... My brother is an a hole.

Well when the wife and I were at the beach last month our 12 yo dog apparently wasn't happy about being left with the mother in law. He decided to chew a little on a stairwell baluster. I looked on the web and found that Lowes carried a replacement in stock so I went and picked up two. The description stated it was a traditional replacement. Well - it wasn't a 100% match for sure. After cutting the damaged spindle in half and removing it I took it and a new spindle over to the shop and mounted the new spindle to my lathe and used a few different scrapers to reshape the bulb portion pretty close to the original. Below is the obvious damaged spindle, the unmodified new one and finally my modified spindle which now just needs paint.

Thanks! After years of working with boring straight rectangular lumber for people, I glean enjoyment working the wood in a more organic manner. I'm a great admirer of George Nakashimas work.

A couple of progressive pics leading to the big live edge shelf which is 11' long, 14" deep and 2" thick. I dropped the tree I milled it from as with all the other interior lumber in the house including counters and flooring. I left several big cedars lay on the ground for a year to let them peck up more for character on the walls. No sheet rock in this house. It's a tinder box for sure!

I like how you alternated the end grain on the interior "siding", and the shelf looks great!

Lets talk dovetails.

I've never done a dovetail. It's something that I've been wanting to try for a bit and will probably try sometime this summer if the missus will give me a little break. I've got a couple of hand saws and would like to make a box for them, and have been thinking about using a dovetail "just because".

Anyway, the style these days seems to be very narrow pins (top of the pin nearly the thickness of saw kerf). What are your thoughts?
(yes, this is a half blind dovetail, but you get the point, tiny little pins where the thin edge is not much more than a saw kerf thickness) I feel like I've seen regular dovetails with pins thinner than this, but of course, when I was looking, I couldn't find them.


They just seem like they'd be weaker than something a bit more substantial.
