Moderna 94.5% effective

From the WSJ this morning

Moderna Says Its Covid-19 Vaccine Was 94.5% Effective in Latest Trial

Awaiting more-complete safety data, expected later this month, Moderna said it plans by early December to seek federal authorization for shot

Quote:
Moderna Inc. [US:MRNA] said its experimental coronavirus vaccine was 94.5% effective at protecting people from Covid-19 in an early look at pivotal study results, the second vaccine to hit a key milestone.

Of 95 people in the study who developed Covid-19 with symptoms so far, 90 had received a placebo and only five Moderna’s vaccine, the company said Monday. The findings move the vaccine closer to wide use, because they indicate it is effective at preventing disease that causes symptoms, including severe cases.

Good news! Is this the same type of vaccine that Pfizer has developed (mRNA - 2 shots needed, must be stored at -a gazillion degrees)?

Yep. Doesn't take more than a normal walk in freezer to store it. That's huge.

Pfizer is using their own distribution network (though they are working with Warp Speed to track vaccinations). They have designed their own storage containers. Moderna is using the warp speed network (I believe McKesson) .

Heard about this this morning, made my day, can't wait until June of next year when life will be pretty much back to normal, maybe sooner here in Boston since everyone will take a vaccine.

I realize the amount of money the “winning” company will make, but this is a Global pandemic, why is the world not mandating all companies work together to find a solution they all agree on. The “race” to the cure will have nothing but casualties...

Thats great in concept but who would bear the costs if they were unsuccessful?

Imagine this took 2 years to develop and in the end, the virus went away on its own. Who would pay for the wasted development costs?

The "race" to the cure has resulted in two (currently) vaccines that appear to be extremely effective in a record amount of time. It usually takes years.

You were part of that trial? If so, hope you didn't get the placebo.

The Doctor all but directly told me I had the vaccination. He said the placebo was sterile saline. I had the "right" side affects.

They are tracking antibodies. I had a blood draw 4 weeks after the second injection. My next blood draw is 6 months after second injection.

90%+ effective is promising, but doesn't it depend on how long it lasts?

Do you go around maskless in crowds and touching everything as part of the test?

Thank you for being part of the solution. I think I heard those that got the placebo will be first in line for the real stuff?

The goal is to get enough people vaccinated during its effective time where the number of available hosts to the virus drops to zero (or nearly to zero). At that point the virus basically dies off. At worst it would stop proliferating. That’s simplistic but that’s the general idea (I’m not an epidemiologist).

In any case, really good news. I’m very happy to hear it’s coming from a US company (and most especially not a Chinese one!)
