X1 is a nice laptop. Decide how badly you need the slim X case.
You might get better specs with a T workstation case. https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/faqs/laptop-faqs/best-thinkpad-for-you/

We have Dell servers, laptops, PC's at work. 70+ employees.
Many working from home remotely. Marketing department does use Apple, but that's for graphics is all. Never have has a problem with the Dell brand. I wouldn't blow them off because of one negative reviewer on a car forum. What do you currently have? Year, Brand, model, processor, memory, hard drive? And what do you want? Are you just going to be doing Excel worksheets, word processing? Or do you want great graphics, video, sound? Solid state drive? Memory is interesting, get as much as you can afford, but not less than 16GB, I would at least try for 32GB. But there is decreasing marginal utility... You might notice a huge difference between 8GB, 16GB to 32GB but not notice a difference between 32GB versus 64GB.... Do you also want a docking station? That's how my work computer is set up. I can go back and forth office/home/office/home.... Dual monitors, printers, etc.... I find (using a lot of different devices) it gets to the "feel" of the keyboard, mouse... Some are clunky, others smooth as silk. Kind of like cars... or motorcycles.. You want one that suits you...

For surfing & videos, a $4-$500 (new) laptop will do. I bought an XPS 5 years ago still running strong.

Reading here it seems that the peo Dell stuff is good stuff. The last Dell I bought was a desktop with dual HD's, a pretty fast CPU, huge storage and most importantly of all, a LOT of RAM as I got it to edit videos. It came with so much BS on board that I really want to wipe it and install a new clean Win 10. An example was the included video editing software. That got me hook line and sinker getting me to spend another $100 to unlock the potential. Worked so awful that I insisted on getting my money back. I blame Dell for promoting this junk and it's all over the place in the start window. When it comes to computers I want nothing but what I will use along with some performance. Cleaning all the crap up is beyond my ability. |

I have had many laptops but they seem to go bad after two years. Dell, HP, Asus etc. Just bought a 17 inch screen laptop HP at Costco (returnable within 90 days) and am happy with it. Costco has a two year warranty as standard which is good. Am used to Windows 10. Apple could be simpler but don't want to spend big $$$. So far so good.

Last year, my Dell laptop was getting real slow on the internet. I checked the speed with a kindle chromebook and the kindle was showing 10 times the speed.
I brought the Dell into a local guy that wipes everything off the hard drive...saves it and reinstalls the same programs that the computer came with as new. Then he re-installs your data and pic. The process changed my Dell into the same as brand new. Very well money spent.

I'm not saying Dell is better than the other manufacturers, actually most have the same components inside, processors, hard drives, memory....
But, Dell has the regular on-line consumer sales, where you could/would get the computers chock full of unwanted software, and then there is the Dell Business sales portal. And those generally come completely clean of the unwanted software. And you can certainly specify that also when you place an order. Interestingly, the prices might be different on each of the portals for the same item. Particularly like monitors.

https://thisistrue.com/dellhell/ https://consumerist.com/tag/dell-hell/ I'm sure they do it right many times. The mark of a good company is when there is a problem will they make it right and do the right thing for the customer? Dell will NOT. I had a problem and they could care less. Appealing to escalations is a waste of time. They give you the "I can understand your concern" BS and then say "No soup for you". "I never had a problem" is not the same as "I had a problem and they did what it takes to fix it and/or satisfy the customer.

Depends on what you need it for?
I’ve had many Dell’s and HP’s over the years and they do tend to go (or the batteries) after a couple years. The best laptops I’ve ever had and still use are MacBook Airs.

Those criticisms might have more relevance if they weren't around 10-15 years old.
But, this discussion is more like Ford versus Chevy versus Dodge versus Jeep... Quote:

Yes it was a long time ago but 'fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me'. As far as I'm concerned they are are crooks and I refuse to support the company. Remember this isn't about technology or price. This is about the ethics of the company when they need to do the right thing. Have they changed? Maybe but I refuse to take that risk again. There are too many competitors.
The OP asked for opinions and I gave him mine along with thousands of others who found them to not value their customers by doing the right thing for them either.

I went ahead and ordered the ThinkPad in the link I posted. I like what I've read about IBM's quality, which Lenovo seems to be continuing. The only drawback is the 14" as JackDidley pointed out, but I can live with that. When I search reviews of this particular laptop, I get a solid feeling about it's keypad and historic great reviews, so I'm not going to worry about the smaller screen and go with it.
I do have a guy that strips off all the bloatware and will do that again. He says it needs to be done before the computer touches the internet. I didn't need spectacular specs, just wanted to get a sturdy laptop with a large hard drive. We'll see. Thanks for all the thoughtful input!

It's a great laptop, will serve you well, and it will retain some resale value.
16GB is great. IPS screen is awesome. i7-10510U is fine for casual home use Bloatware is not really a thing anymore. It is no longer 2006. It's barely a thing anymore. Some of the posts in this thread are totally obsolete and outdated. Check Start -> StartUp Apps and just turn off anything you're not using. Done.

That should be a great computer. 19 hour battery would be super. I think my Dell does good to go 2 hours.

I’m late to the party but I was voting for that Lenovo too. I’ve become very brand loyal to Lenovo over the years. They’re built for commercial customers so in my opinion they seem more robust than typical consumer computers made by other manufacturers. And the specs on that one look awesome, especially for the price. The screen size doesn’t bother me. Laptops that are laptop sized are a lot easier to carry.
