Thanks, Mike - appreciate it, brother! I can't wait to take her through the gears!

As a side note.....I was working in my driveway this morning when my neighbors walked by with their dog. He is the past president of IMSA. I shared the news of my new 850 with him and he was very impressed and proceeded to share with me the story of the IPD 850 race car.....

Very cool, Baz!

Love the IPD shot. Driver likely Jan Lammers, former F1 shoe?

Btw, I paid $6k in 2003 for the '95 8fitty turbo sedan with 91k miles.
Car was well cared for and the leather was perfect. Loved that car.

Looks like they're holding decent value for the decent ones.

Congrats Baz!
Every time I see a post about a Volvo I think back to the one my mom had. '83 240DL that she bought used with Dad's life insurance money when he died. White on tan cloth with an auto trans. First time I drove it I almost put myself thru the front windshield when I hit the brakes, and this was just pulling it into the garage! That car had some of the best brakes of any car I've ever driven. I like to think she always felt like Dad was taking care of her whenever she drove it.

I think so......pretty cool seeing that wagon on 2 wheels!

Absolutely, Don! There seems to be a bit of a cult following for these cars - wagons especially!

Not at the moment, Steve. I'm kind of a "keep it factory original" guy anyway. I watched a YT vid of a guy who put some updated rubber moldings along the windshield that had channels so rain water wouldn't fly around and into the cabin, which I thought made sense. So we'll see. Much to be investigated!

Nice story, Scott....thanks for sharing. That's one thing I really appreciate about these cars - how safe they are in any kind of crash. Hopefully I'll never find out from personal experience, but with today's crazy drivers - you never know.

I joined a couple FB Volvo groups - and on one of them when I posted this car, one of the members posted this:

Actually I’ve found the white engines to be very reliable turbo or no turbo. We’ve had 5, 3 non turbos and 2 turbos . I’ve never gotten rid of one with less than 150,000 miles and others were 180K, 200K and 250K. None ever needed any any engine work. The old red engines are fine, but the white engines have finer tolerances and in my experience go further without needing any engine work.
I upgraded from 240 to the 850 in large part because of the engine. I loved our various 240’s, but they desperate needed a bit more power. The non turbo isn’t hugely powerful, but it’s a perfectly peppy and enjoyable amount of power for the 850. I especially enjoyed the stick shift 5 speed.

Nice score on the new wagon Baz!
I think you will like some of the mod cons that come with the newer model, better safety and driving features.

The mods Ive made to my Jetta sportwagen are additions for camping, nice inflatable air mattress, screens for a couple of Windows, and a small tent for the back.

Once I feel more comfortable being out traveling for fun it should be a good setup.

Lots of nice Volvo wagons out there when I was shopping, you found a nice one.

Cheers Richard

Thanks, Rich! Never thought about taking her camping but good idea! I've slept in the back of my old 145's before so wouldn't be the first time.

Like what? I know they make a lot of stuff including upgrades. I've watched a few of their videos and they do a good job explaining what they offer. I know the heater core is just one of the things to look at. I will go over her once I take possession. Shooting for this Wednesday to pick her up.

Will keep the thread updated with more as appropriate. Man I'm still very excited.....getting another VOLVO is a pretty big deal!

Suspension, sway bars, everything in the front end...bit by bit.

They can be made to handle very well.

Rikard Rydell was the hotshot driver of the Volvo 859 estate in the one season they completed in the British Touring Cars championship. Subsequent years they used the 850 saloon.
Subaru used the Levorg estate car to win the BTC in 2017 with Ash Sutton driving. It was in rwd format, as 4wd is not allowed in the BTC.

Good to know, Petrol - thanks!

Paul was also correct in his post #22 above.

Quote:
Behind the wheel of one of the cars was 26-year-old Rickard Rydell who, despite his tender age, had a great deal of experience from karting, Formula 3000 and Formula 3. In the other car was his team-mate Jan Lammers, a 37-year-old Dutchman who had competed in various classes including Formula 1.
