I'm only 2 years older than you but...

The best advice I could give you is only rely on yourself and if you have something you're passionate about do it now.
- If you don't then just live the best way you can.

Fat Drunk and Stupid is no way to go through life son.

soon to be 60 here and I have learned one thing....all the sleepless nights and worrying about things out of your control was pointless.

These have always brought perspective on life to me:

At the end of the game the pawn and the king end up in the same box.

You do not truly own anything that you can't carry in both arms at a dead run. - Robert A. Heinlein

Only break one law at a time - my sister's favorite quote

My best advice to my kids. . . . .
You cannot have any effect on the past
You cannot yet access the future
All you can control is NOW.
So if action needs to be taken, that really simplifies when you should do it

You learn who is a back stabber and who is a true friend in life. Dont listen to folks that know whats best for you, because usually 99% of the time they are wrong, and dont know what they are talking about. Never count on your "buddies" only count on true blue friends. Never trust punks. Never trust the anti-american folk out there, they dont have your welfare in mind. Keep a cool head. Get a sense of humor. Stay young at heart. Find a inexpensive hobby. Stop Hording, you aint impressing anybody. Date as many hot broads you can before you snuff it. Find you a god, where you are going you probably wont like it. LOL!

Acknowledge that this life is only temporary. Prepare for eternity. Accept that what you feel is really important now is not in the long run. Tell your kids and lead by example: “Most of the things you will struggle with in this life will be self inflicted and avoidable. “

Only worry about things within your control, the rest is stress and wasted mental energy.

An old buddy of mine who was a platoon leader in Vietnam used to say to his guys before they went out for the day "Keep you eyes and ears open, and watch where you put your feet."

Today's equivalent of that is "Keep your wits about you, and don't trust everyone."

I tend to think when things go wrong "Hard and fast, aim for the eye socket, good follow through - then get the f' outa there."

even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.
One of my mothers favorites. It hung in our home. I put it on the back page of the missalette for her funeral service.

Good advice in all those cheese Country songs.

Don't blink

Live like you were dying

Be humble and Kind

Just Dance- I gave a collector version of this to my daughter. She was born in 2000 the same year this song was released.

I like "live beneath your means" and "today could just have been the best day of your life - consider that tomorrow"

I'm one of the younger people on here at 41 but I have been giving advice to my son his whole life, lol. My biggest advice to a young person is about marriage. Who you marry has a huge impact on your financial and emotional life for many, many years.

My criteria:
1. Marry someone who is of similar intelligence level. (Notice I said intelligence not education. They are not the same)
2. Marry someone who smiles more than they frown or complain.
3. Marry someone with similar values.

Good advice there, if I could also add;
4.No matter how hard you try, you can't change a potential spouse to suit your needs, they are usually on their best behavior while still romancing.
