I always wore leather boots for safety. I mowed lawns in the summer months as a teenager.

If you want a good looking lawn, sharpen blades every time. Use a simple file.

Haha, I had that. Luckily I had safety glasses on. Wooo, I was a bit dazed afterwards from the impact but the safety glasses stayed intact.

I always wore shoes, but not boots. Yes, I spent my years from 12-15 mowing lawns for money.

When I was 12 all I had was a push mower.

I grew up mowing lawns and so did my friends. No weedwackers, edge trimmers, or leaf blowers... just cut the damn grass. That opportunity didn’t exist by the time my kids came along. EVERYONE around here uses professional landscapers these days, and standards have gone way up in terms of what a good lawn looks like. That’s true of golf courses and baseball stadiums too- if you watch old footage it’s striking how manicured today’s ones are compared to anything before say 1980 or so.

I pushed mine too, but I'm guessing you meant something more like this?

Interesting. I did my mowing in the early to mid 80s. When my kids were of age, I only saw a couple/few kids in the years that we lived in the neighborhood that we lived in asking about mowing lawns. I would have thought the neighborhood would have been prime for that sort of thing. The last several years that we lived there, we tried several folks, but most did a horrible job. We ended up settling on a place called Econo-Cuts, I think. They'd bring a trailer in, and then unleash about a half a dozen Hispanic fellas. They'd mow, trim, edge and blow my yard is 7 minutes. I think it was usually 4-5 guys working on my yard at a time, 2 mowers, 2 trimmers and a blower or something like that. Best $25 I ever spent (vs my working in the yard for 2+ hours in the summer sun ever week).

There was a freak accident in the SF Bay Area years ago. It was popular to take the engine cover off VW Bugs along with various mods. The VW was on el Camino Real, I believe, and the two-piece alternator belt pulley came apart and one piece went flying and hit a kid in the neck and severed his jugular vein. The most unlucky kid died in minutes.

I was way ahead of my time. Fossil fuel. At age 3, I filled the mower's gas tank with pea gravel. I remember the ass whipping vividly. Next week, I was the mower. It didn't get much better until 15 years later.

I have home movies of me pushing the mower and I had to reach way UP to reach the handle bars. We lived in Hawaii for many years and mowing was 12 months of year. My brother and I got into fistfights over who got the use the mower that afternoon. Mom had to make a calendar of who got to use the mower.

In the heat of summer I mow and edge in shorts and a t-shirt. I do wear headphone with noise canceling and I stream Pandora while mowing and edging. I wear sunglasses that are wrap around eye protection, and a large floppy sun hat. And just old worn out walking shoes to mow in. When pulling backwards on the mower, do it while standing upright and not at angle.

It takes me 2 hours to edge, trim, mow and clean up and put everything away for my yard. I could easily afford to pay to have it done. I prefer to do it for the exercise. It does have instant gratification. Shut down the equipment and look at how much better everything looks, and nothing better than a after mowing beer.

Thankfully he spared us the other 25, as well as the circles, arrows and paragraphs.

Terror is hitting a brass sprinkler head with a 6.5hp mower.
Cant say I recommend that.
I would say get a shot and have it looked at.

Haha, or the lawn mower might call a "leg before wicket" foul.

You guys don't even want to hear about my lawnmower stories. It does not so much cut the bone as shatter it.

Top tip- ALWAYS push the mower, NEVER pull it toward you.

For a better cut, always grab the mower by the handle and walk the other direction.
