My nephew is in sales for a large lumber warehouse. I asked him if it's a supply issue? He said no way. The mills and yards are hoarding lumber and there is plenty of supply. The issue is DEMAND. One builder submitted a bid to his client and found the lumber package had jumped $50K since he put the bid together last fall........

Everything goes in cycles I say.

As crazy as the lumber prices have shot up, the funny thing is , composite decking is still pretty much the same price as a year ago.

Wow. In my immediate neighborhood which measures about 4x5 blocks, currently there are 3 homes being built. Old houses were torn down, and homes about twice their size are being built.

You should see the pics I get once a month from a yard where lumber is stored. No shortage there. Along with the pics there's the captions "lumber shortage? I don't think so" in the text.

I stand corrected (when's the last time one here said that?). There are several stories on-line about it.

I don't know how guarded I should be about the pics I get from this guy. I don't know what the legality is of taking pics of a lumber storage area. But they do make me question just how much of a "shortage" there really is.

I've been planning on extending my raised back concrete patio out about 5' further with wood decking. After reading this thread I'm high tailing it over to HD and pick up my lumber before it goes up any more!

The land clearing for a development of 154 homes near us seems to have come to a standstill lately. I don't think they are in a rush to buy lumber to start building now.

I've been planning a shed on my side yard for a while now...a needed fence replacement and then rebuild after a tree fell on the newly finished fence put the shed on the back burner for about 7 months.

I priced out the lumber for the shed last summer, $506. Did it again last week and I'm looking at $722 now. Not a deal killer for me but multiply that up to a house, or many houses and I can see why work is stopping.

Look around the neighborhood for the one you like the design of... then go rent a big bobcat with some forks. $200 for rent on the bobcat is cheaper than $722 plus labor.

I've heard that it's a combination of issues, covid, some sort of beetle killing pine in Canada, and it seems like there was some issue in China, but maybe that was just Covid.

I am in mid plan to build a lake place- simple garage with loft/living space above. Having my tech designer switch from stick to post frame to save costs on lumber and time.....

Just placed my lumber order, it normally costs me about $200 this time it was just north of $300 for the same order 4 months later.

This is junk pine I order used to stake construction sites.

I have been toying with trying out some reusable PVC Pipes to mark property corners on residential lot jobs. I may make some up and experiment with them and see how they hold up.

I really hate how wasteful it is to keep tossing down stakes over and over only to have them eaten by termites or run over by box blades. Maybe something more official looking will last longer and can be reused?

I've heard that lumber from mills and lumber yards can still be had at reasonable prices, although I can't confirm. I've heard that the main issue is construction pine and Chinese plywood.

Just go around to other jobsites at night and collect their stakes. You know-recycle them.

I have been building my new shop (inside my old barn) and had plans on using OSB board for the walls....one look at the $25+ a sheet OSB, and I loaded up 16 sheets of drywall at $6.32 a sheet.

Luckily I stick built our new greenhouse last year during the Covid shutdown last April...saved myself about $1500.

On Monday I purchased two 2x4x10 interior wall studs , total with tax was just under $28.00 . The first thing I thought of was I am glad I am not building a house .
