Hedge trimmer

I have had a Craftsman electric (extension cord/not battery) hedge trimmer for probably 30 years. It’s finally giving out and I need to replace it. I want to get a pole style trimmer this time and not sure what is the best kind to get. The battery powered stuff (blowers, string trimmers, etc.) scare me a little, maybe just because I’ve never had one. I’ve had good service from my Echo gas powered string trimmer. Wondering what your experience has been with pole trimmers and what you recommend. Thanks.

Not sure what kind of trimming you need to do. Mostly palms here and I use a Hackzall by Milwaulkee and a ladder. If they are too tall for my comfort threshold, I hire someone.

I also have a pole saw by Corona with a fiberglass handle that telescopes for the high up stuff that isn't too involved.

For lower stuff I use an Echo double-sided gas powered 2 cycle hedge trimmer. I used it this morning at one of my accounts and it worked great, as it always does. I also use an Echo gas powered 2 cycle chain saw if need be. 16" bar.

I've heard good things about the E-Go product line for cordless battery power tools but I've always been a Ryobi guy myself. But I don't use one so can't personally testify. Sorry.

There's a lot of hand-held power tools out there. A LOT!

I've gone thru a lot of hedge trimmers over the years and I had very good success with E-Go battery operated. The battery lasts the full length of time needed to trim several large hedges. Unfortunately, the battery got stolen and I have yet to find a replacement.

For pole saw, I have a Sthil cordless. This was very expensive but works great.

Buy Echo or Stihl, you will have a 20 year trimmer. I have these or very similar:

A little expensive up front, pay now or pay later. I got tired of replacing string trimmers, hedge trimmers and edgers every two years. These are great products, take care of them and they will last years.

Lowes is now carrying E-Go products, Vern. Do you have a Lowes nearby? If so, they should have the battery you need.

I mostly just trim azaleas and other bushes but some are so wide I’m going to get a pole trimmer so the bushes don’t cut me up. The Echo pole hedge trimmer is about $500 and I don’t use it often enough to spend that much. Do the battery powered models work as good as the extension cord models? Does the E-Go model come as a pole trimmer?

Proud owner of a Stihl Hedge Trimmer as well as a Stihl Combi power head with Pole Trimmer, Weedeater, Brushcutter and Edger attachments. Fill them up with fuel/oil mixture, turn on the choke, pull the starting cord 2 or 3 times and it cranks right up. Coincidentally, I've been trimming shrubs all around the house the past week or so. Couple hours 3 different nights. We are hosting a party Friday evening and want the place to look presentable.

I bought my dad a greenworks 40v extendable hedge trimmer. The battery is still good. The trimmer? Not so much. He snapped that thing like a twig somehow.

The few times I used it I really liked it. My dad is hard on stuff sometimes so who knows what happened to make it break at one of the pivot joints.

Don’t be afraid to try a battery powered trimmer. I took the plunge about 5 years ago. Don’t recall the brand but use it regularly and works great to this day. The battery holds a charge for a long time, recharges quickly and the trimmer does a great job.

I'll second the EGO battery hedge trimmer. The blades rattle more than my old, terribly hard to start Echo trimmer but it'll cut through at least a 1/2" branch if not a 3/4".

For a real pole (chain) saw the electric SunJoe brand on Amazon are excellent.

For trimmers, I have a Toro two-stroke that's really good.

I've had good luck with the Ryobi "One" stuff from HD. 18v battery that is interchangeable with most of their stuff.

I've been happy with my Stihl electric. I plug it in, trim the hedges, put it away with a little oil on the blades.
My concern with the battery is how long will it last. If it's 5 years and I trim twice a year I get 10 trims before needing a new battery.

great pruning tool. great hedging tool? not so much. In fact it would borderline suck.

i'm old school. I used hedging shears, but I was torturing myself, so I took the entire vine hedge out. no more need
