Landlord, Air Force vet homeless after tenants stop paying rent during eviction ban

A landlord in upstate New York is living out of a car with her daughter after being unable to collect rent from tenants in three properties she owns due to eviction moratoriums.

"I don't understand how they can give my private property to somebody to live for free. I bought that property. I fixed it up with my blood, sweat and tears," Brandie LaCasse, a single mother and Air Force veteran, told CBS News.

Now, LaCasse is living out of a car with her daughter, as well as staying with friends when she is able.

LaCasse said she missed out on receiving $23,000 in rent over nearly a year because of federal and state eviction moratoriums that were put in place due to the pandemic. She explained to the outlet that she told the tenants they had to move out so she could move in, but they instead stopped paying rent, yet remained in the homes.

"I've cried many nights, like thinking, 'Where's my money?'" she said.

One of LaCasse’s tenants, Carla McArthur, said she’s unable to pay rent due to childcare costs and her family suffering from the virus during the pandemic.

"I feel bad that I have not been able to pay her," McArthur said. "We've gone from two incomes. I had COVID-19 twice. My kids all have had it once. My husband's had it once. We've been affected by the virus."

McArthur, however, was approved for rent relief in New York, while LaCasse has still not received any funds.

In San Diego my daughter knows several Navy officers who, when they deployed, allowed folks to rent rooms or the whole house on a short term rental basis. Now that they've returned they cannot evict the tenants due to the moratorium, so some are forced to live on the ship and some are having to rent rooms elsewhere. What a cluster$%&k.

Im not a landlord anymore. Got dumb lucky and sold my last rental condo in 2019. However, the Tsunami may be back on - supremes just ruled against JB.

I have an eviction hearing Monday morning I will be filing for another eviction the same day, this could not have happened at a better time for me .

Welp, the Supreme Court tells the CDC "you can't do that" and now the evictions are gonna get moving. There will be a lot of landlords with totally trashed properties, but the places will be emptied of the trash and painted and fixed back up.

Your 2 are a good example.
They deserve to be evicted, and hopefully will be in short order, but they won’t be homeless. They’ll just move on to their next victim.

Lots of restaurants in our area that have no dining room open for lack of staff all the way down to fast food. Every factory looking for decently paid help.

Tell the free loader, squatters to get off their azzes, and get back to work, they can't all be social media influencers, or have a thriving YouTube channel !

Only by choice...there are far more jobs available than people who are willing to work. Every fast food restaurant and convenience store seems to be hiring.

"Help Wanted" signs are plastered all over town. Almost every business is trying to hire.
Where will they work? Wherever they want. Opportunities in every direction.
