I am wondering, just how the hell do you build an underground garage so close to the ocean???
Just go to any beach and dig a hole and see how quick you find water!!!
I saw a report that the sister building to the north has not experience the water intrusion issues that this building had which tells me that this building was apparently doomed from the beginning being that not all that long after it's construction it started having issues with water intrusion that went on basically left unchecked other than pumping the water out, but it has been noted that the pumping could not keep up and that the water would seep away. Big heavy building on water soaked ground, recipe for disaster. Just a sad shame!!!!

The Washington Post reported that 5 out of 7 condo board members resigned in the fall of 2019 with one of the major reasons being condo owners dragging their feet on repairs. As others have stated there were concerns identified about structural repairs that needed to be done . I hate to say it but this may be a case of " we told you so " .

Thanks Paul I couldn't copy the link from my phone . As horrible as this is for family/friends/loved ones of the deceased and missing what a mess for the rest of the condo owners . I assume no one is allowed to go in to retrieve anything . Too risky . I also assume at some point in time the structure that is still standing has to be torn down . Does that mean all personal items/cash/documents/legal papers are all lost ?

Rick,
I saw it on my phone and had to email it to myself and open and post the link.

After reading it I can see how it all played out. It seems like the Board was doing all they could considering the situation.

^^^ I wonder how many of those who fought the board on the structural repairs perished in the collapse. I wonder how those who survived feel about their actions at this point.

From the article.....
"Efforts to reach virtually everyone who has served on the board since 2018 were unsuccessful; at least two of those members have been reported missing."

I'm surprised that part of the building is still standing.

That part of the building had a little more structural strength. The shear wall was built around the elevator and stairs in the middle of the building and that’s probably the strongest portion of the building.

If I remember correctly, the footing under that is the only part of the structure that had tension piles in the foundation.

Oy vey (Yiddish: אױ װײ‎) is a Yiddish phrase expressing dismay or exasperation

How many times in those condo board meetings was this term used???

Again culture counts and in turn has consequences.

Wouldn't of happened in Japan, just sayin

We all know the Florida legislature will be changing some laws and the 40 year inspection will be changed I bet. And lots more inspections will be required.

Building inspectors will be a booming job opportunity. I know condos are common in that part of Florida. The new laws will be making condos more expensive, and hopefully a lot safer. I wonder how many other condos will lose their residency certificate and be evacuated. I have to feel sorry for people that have their live savings tied up in a condo, and now can't even live there. Those other building built at the same time by the same builder would be terrifying to be in.

Maybe broken due to some settlement of the foundation already?

Certainly a precursor to the "breaking" point and inevitable collapse.

prior to ANDREW to be an inspector you just had to show up and inspect really no rules or ed or anything in fla
now the test is only given to registered building contractors of a few years experience
with very many subcategory's to Q for like paving or pipes or drainage or structures
and you only can inspect the category's you pass the tests for
or a state lic eng BS plus the same tests

Now they are worried about the rest of it collapsing. They have halted the recovery efforts.

It's being reported the condo is insured for 45 million , that will hardly be the deposit on all the costs that will be racked up with clean up/demolition/lawsuits/other . This is going to be one ugly ride.

Yes, and the code writers need to take account of changes over the last 40 years too.

you have to wonder if higher water and salt water intrusion may have had something to do with this...
